XTP was designed to expand 1.5x of its original diameter...as I recall. I have always been impressed with the bullet in the calibers I have used...but I have no experience with it in .380.

    Outside the coup
Did you even watch the videos? It's cute to mock but he used ballistics gelatin and denim, which is what the standard is.

Yep, I've seen the videos a long time ago. Yep, he got a little bit of expansion along with the penetration. He also did this in a controlled environment. Could he get repeatable results? I'm sure he does as long as he duplicates the conditions. Those conditions aren't going to be perfect in a self defense situation. There are many factors in play and you can't count on something that barely makes the minimum standard to preform the same in those other conditions.

As I said before, you may get lucky and it work, but that doesn't make it a good overall choice. Carry what you are comfortable with and like, but you need to be realistic in it's limitations. There are many better options out there.

Little late to the party but here's my thoughts. If someone can rapidly deploy and get accurate hits on target then I think they are fully capable of defending themselves with a 22. Can they serve a warrant on a violent felon or go fight in Afghanistan with it? No! But the little .22 will probably be enough going out to dinner with the family or swinging by Wal-mart. With all that said, I carry a M&P 2.0 9mm and am the belief carry the biggest gun you can, but I also believe carrying any kind of gun takes you out of the "easy victim" category for a opportunistic thug.

See that's the thing, if you think there are some factors that are important to consider that aren't accounted for in that test, all you have to do is change up your test to try to account for those other variables! It's not too hard, really.

    Nope.

Furthermore, how is serving a warrant or fighting in Afghanistan somehow more important than defending an individual's life when they are attacked? You need the best tools for the job.

When serving a warrant, the bad knows the cops aren't going to leave until he is arrested. Fight or flight kicks in. He's either going to prison for along time or hes going to fight and hopefully get away. Same way with war. They are there to kill you. That is their job. Its all about realistic risk level. If a guy approaches a couple to steal her purse and his wallet, he is doing so with the mindset that he is predator and they are prey. You introduce a 22lr into the equation, the prey now isn't so easy to deal with anymore. The bad guy can leave to fight another day. His motivation to stay in the fight isn't high. Again, I'm not advising people to carry a .22, but the notion that one can't adequately defend themselves if they live a law abiding life is non-sense in my opinion. JMO! Carry on killers. :)

    I'd take a knife over nothing and a .22 over a knife and 9mm (and up) over a .22....so why carry a .22?

    Could be anywhere
Okay, it's not useless...but nobody says if I dump 6 rounds from my S&W 22-4 .45 into their face it's going to be a questionable outcome.

As an aside, my S&W M&P .22 (not compact) is bigger than my carry M&P 9c...fit in the same holster though.

    So.

Why carry the .22 over something like a 9mm again? Still fuzzy.
