Computers are not like cars where you can buy one and use it for 20 years.[/QUOTE]

Ok you purchased a car made by "Christmas Motor works". You installed a very efficient fuel injection system.
Your car runs like fine turned watch.
You live in a mountain area. You installed a heavy duty breaking system. Everything works great for 5 years.
"CMW" leaves a notice in your car that fuel system is not compatible anymore. For $100. a year you can use theirs.
Then you find out that your brake system was disabled. Again you receive a notice that you had them to long and are not compatible with OLD model car you have.
The very same system are installed in a brand new car. they are working perfect in it.
Do you just say well OK I will now pay your to do what I use to do free of service fees.

    Switch to Linux and LibreOffice.

Or, just run LibreOffice on Windows.

It should open all your existing files OK.

Can anyone explain this up date change?
In the task bar at the bottom of my screen. There is an icon showing battery / power status.
Before this resent update. The battery rectangle was white. if the battery was charging and show the power plug. White squares would build up the rectangle.
When completely charge the rectangle would be 100% white.
Now the rectangle is blank and has a red "X" at the lower left corner of the rectangle. it still shows the power plug while plugged.
When running on battery the "X" is flashing.

    Windows 5 was 1.9 better than 3.1, but 90 worse than 95.

...I never used Windows 95 at home. I went straight from a 486 running 3.1 to a Sony with a Celeron running XP. That old Acer 486 was a workhorse.

This is a bad analogy. It doesn't describe what happened.

You are welcome to keep Windows the same as when you bought it. Your legacy software will work.
Or you are welcome to update Windows in order to protect your system from all of the various threats.
What you cannot do is expect Microsoft to design new systems for (long) obsolete software.

I had a Remington 521-T .22 rifle that I bought extra magazines for. Then I got a 10/22, and I wasn't surprised to learn that an accessory designed for one didn't work on the other.

Yeah, it's still named Windows, but it's a new thing. Either upgrade your other software or (warning: bad idea follows) stop upgrading your OS.

    Let me fix your analogy:
You bought a "car". What you actually got was an engine (computer hardware), a chassis and drive train (operating system), and everything else is built on the the chassis and drive train. If you change versions of Windows (9x, XP, 7, 10) you're changing a major component of the car. Your accessory was designed for the 9x chassis, you now have a chassis that is ~four generations newer. You shouldn't be surprised that it isn't compatible.

I can make it simpler as well, you bought a car 20 years ago. You bought some accessories for it, now you bought a new car and want those accessories to work with it when they were never designed for it.

If you really want to be match your current situation: you bought an accessory for a car long ago, that accessory has worked on your current car but a recent safety recall has caused that accessory to stop working because it relied on a component that was discovered to have a safety flaw.

Sounds to me like your battery is toast... and no, that is not Microsoft's fault either, unless you are running a Surface (which I take it your are not).

If you know which Windows update caused the problem you can uninstall it and maybe the programs will run for you. Having said that I agree with what others have said. Either update to the latest WP or shift to OpenOffice or Libre. I have used OpenOffice for years and it works quite well. I realize that those who use WP are used to the program and don't want to change but in the end you must change or be left behind. The ball is in your court.

What right do they have to tell you what you can continue using.

It's their software. They own the rights to it. If they don't want to continue supporting some older software, thats on them. Don't like it? Build your own Operating System and market it to the whole world, then try to continue to support every feature in it while keeping billions of people happy. Let me know how it works out for you.

I'm no fan of Microsoft, but I really think that your expectations are way out of line and unrealistic.

My laptop is an 09 Sony VAIO. It has been great but I see the handwriting on the wall. I do not want to start fresh again. I like what I have. Used to it.
"BUTT".....I know change is coming. I will grumble a bit. Maybe get snarky about it but that will be about all.

The question about what rights they have.....read the documents we all get when we click "OK" and agree to the terms.
I hope not to come across as a Butt head but man, let it go and step up.

In the middle of the night Remington updated your Remington 521-T .22 rifle. Now none of your magazines fit you 521.
Remington tells you your magazines are out-date. You now have to rent magazines for $XXX.CC a year.

I heard of Linux and LibreOffice but never seen it operate. Do you know o anywhere I can learn more about it and see it operate.

Not the same. Those are two pieces of hardware. In this instance, the software is between your ears.

Perhaps someone can point you to a thumbstick Linux version. That way you can run in on your computer without disturbing anything on the hard drive.

You're comparing apples and oranges. If you don't understand the concept of computing software, and how technology changes, maybe its time to give up on computers.

If you want to see Linux in action you can make a live boot usb stick with Ubuntu. Ubuntu would be best for a first time. It's pretty well baked with lots of nice things right out of the box.

Jump on YouTube and do a search for Ubuntu perhaps there are some intro videos. I can't look for you since I'm at work.

But for the record..... None, 0, nada, of your windows software will run in Linux with out extra work and special software configs.
