Indy isn't that bad. Lived here all my life and we are quite happy here. If you like country life than yeah, this isn't the place for you. For urban life, it's pretty good. About as small of a city as I'd live in.

I used to hold the opinion that many other, in this thread, did concerning Indy... now though, after being around it much more recently, I have to admit, it's not nearly as bad as I once believed. There are actually more than a few places I' relatively fond of.

Keep telling yourself it’s not that bad then think about when was the last time you viewed the local news and no violent act was reported?
Can someone explain the “urban” lifestyle and the advantages?

The NRA Annual Meeting of Members will be in Indy late-April. Crime will plummet in downtown for three days.

Yeah violent crime makes the news. Mostly for dramatic effect, remember if it bleeds it leads.
When it comes to violent crime, a vast majority is between people who know each other. Random violence is pretty rare here. Also doesn't help that even when family knows who is involved they refuse to talk to police and expect LE to perform a miracle.
I venture to bet most could be tied back to drugs. Follow the money

Watching the local news is your first mistake. Besides living/growing up on the East Side of Indy (the most "violent"), I also patrolled for 16 years out here. I know what goes on in my City better than most and I still choose to live here. Being around people, lots of dining and shopping options is an attraction. Wife is from Jersey City and we vacation in NYC quite often and LOVE the fact that we can find any ethnic food we feel like and endless activities.

Never have understood the attraction of the “big city” lived all over the country and the world.
If one of our local Police or Deputies got shot it would be a major event like a once in a lifetime type thing.
I would gladly give up the big city lights for the security of not getting carjacked?
The lack of “community” in the big cities has always made me uneasy thanks for explaining your view I guess it’s just a different lifestyle?

Indy is not a big city. Far from it. And you're right, it's a lifestyle or preference.

I love Indy as we can go out and eat a variety of places to choose from and the drive is short. If there are events (sports, concerts, conventions) downtown, traffic isn't as bad unlike big cties.

The ISM Imax as nice to have too when we want to watch a movie.

I don't get the allure of living in or too close to a big city either.

It depends on your perspective. Indianapolis is absolutely a big city by my standards. It's not even close to being as loathsome as the urban areas of California or a hell hole like Chicago, but it's still a big city.

    Fishers
Prayers go out to my Brother, and all Officers and their families everywhere.
The local news this weekend listed Fishers at #2, and Carmel as #3, on its list of Indiana's Safest Cities............St. John Indiana was #1.
Fishers where I live is the next Lawrence (IMHO) and I have lived in both areas since 1992.
Build that wall with a crossing at 96th st and I-69.
My kids live in Fishers, Avon, and Camby, still you never know.

    Stay safe.

And the internet has made the print and broadcast media desperate to be first and most sensational. OTOH, cops getting shot is becoming more common nationwide.
Actually, the opposite, at least to the commonality. First is from ALL causes, second is just firearms. The trend actually follows violent crime in general, regardless of the target (Cop or non-cop). Violent crime is actually lower now than previous (many) decades.

Now, the MEDIA sensation, yeah... If it bleeds it leads. And it seems the media is doing a "good job" misleading the public, since the common sentiment is that crime is up.

Great info ElDirector. Since that's numbers vice per 100,000 the increase from 1875-1921 (18th Amendment) is probably driven by having more LEOs/Police Departments being established. Prohibition really stands out as does 65-75 (hippie movement, drugs, war protests, I could go on.) You could spend years looking at data like this. the upward trend to Prohibition and downward trend from 75 look similar. Black powder weapons and Doc gives you a pull of Laudanum on the left side; semi-autos, body armor and awesome trauma care on the right.

Me too Rhino. My high school (K-12 actually) had cornfields on three sides and cow pasture on the other. Directions to Bedford or Brownstown/Seymour began with "if the river's not out..."
