That was a concern i had. The internet has led me to believe that high end 1911 malfunction due to the tight tolerances.

As for high end guns malfunctioning due to tight tolerances....just not true in my experience. A lot of malfunctions can be attributed to ****ty magazines and or shooter error. Riding the slide with your thumb or hand is easy to do with a 1911. It happens a lot without most people even realizing it. This takes velocity away from the slide in recoil and can cause malfunctions. Limp wristing has a similar effect as it takes energy out of the cycling slide.

OP...Honestly, there are a lot of quality 1911 pistols out there in the sub 1k range. The springfield range officer makes a really nice base gun for some custom work. The dan wessons while not sub 1k are nice as well. Kimber gets a bad rap a lot of times too, but most are quality pistols that are going to work.

Again....properly tuned, quality magazines are really important in this platform (even though this isnt unique to the 1911).

You had me until Kimber, I've seen a rash of broken plastic main spring housings pop up on various discussion groups, lots of MIM parts that fail alarmingly fast. Plastic MSH on a 800 + dollar pistol is unacceptable imo. Now the ed brown Kimber years are a different story, but current offerings seem to be nothing but trouble and adding to the anti1911 stigma.

I would agree with you on the plastic mainspring housing. I guess I can honestly say I haven't had a new kimber apart or on my bench for the last few years.

Depending on budget, get a D&L Sports "Professional Model". It is not inexpensive, but it will work and there will be no issues. The Home of Quality Custom Firearms, Tactical Training and The Tactical Marksman's Match...

And Dave is a top notch individual. He did and still makes a lot of innovations that the industry replicates, but never duplicates. 1911's, ar's, ak's, glocks, mp's and bolt guns. If it has anything to do with Dave Lauck it is going to be a serious piece of machinery. I've got a DL original in my safe that I use in multigun, his stuff to me is grail level and the cost follows that grail level ruling. Locally AllenM is excellent, I've shot Praff's guns and they are equally excellent, but when I have the cash to spend on a flex gun D&L is my first and only stop.

Used car money on my AK lol. 1911's are not so bad, unless you want them to be. I'd expect to be over 2k in a Dave Lauck pistol. He has upgrade packages for other brands that he does, but an actual DLSports pistol is probably anywhere between 2.5k to 5k or more depending on what you want.

    Worth it?

100 percent. I'll have one of his custom 1911's one day. I want a 10mm monster and he is probably going to be the one to build it.
My DL Sports SLR in 7.62x39. It's a 1moa custom Arsenal slr104 and it's the most fun you can possibly have with the caliber short of full auto

I have. The guns sure are purdy. But I will never own another.

No knock on those who own and love them.

    Boooooooooooo!!! :dunno:

Just kidding. I’m not familiar with his work, but there are so many qualified and GREAT smiths in the midwest, folks have a lot if great options depending on the type of pistol they are looking for in a custom.

I have collaborated with Allen on so many builds/modifications. I trust everything he does and he comes up with some stellar ideas.
Agreed. There are so many options to choose.

Allen definitely does solid work and built one of my first open guns for me. He has also been kind enough to share a method or two with me when I made a couple booboo’s early on. Good people.

Another local person that you don’t hear about a lot is George Huening. He has been doing some things for a long time that people are just now copying. I believe he had a pistol or two one of the popular magazines years ago.
