Received my SG M1 last month. It was exactly what I wanted. Stock was original (lots of dings and dark) and I believe the barrel was original to the receiver. It's an H&RA dated early '53. Most internal parts are SA. It shoots like a dream.
Would also suggest getting some surplus Greek...
Finally had a chance to get to the range and try out the "new" M1. After sighting in and adjusting sights, was able to get what I thought was a reasonable group for a half blind old fart. As I said before, first time firing one of these since 1966. In the hands of a good shot, the rifle will...
No, I'm not much for competition shooting these days. I have to wear bifocals and it's a little hard to focus on sights and target. I'll leave that to the younger guys. I just like trowing a little lead now and then. Last time I fired one of these was in '66, I'm really looking forward to...
Just received my M1 today. Ordered it in February. I must have been the last one to make it. It's an H&R made in '53 with what appears to be the original barrel (marked 4-53). Most of the internal parts are marked "SA". Stock would also appear to be original (very dark with lots of dings...
Found the same thing at the North store in Ohio. The supply must be so low, they're mostly handling mail orders. I've had my order in for 7 weeks now, and they haven't started to process it yet. 3 to 6 months is probably accurate.
I've just started using PP bullets for my Mauser 71 & 71/84. Haven't had a chance yet to fire them, the weather's been a bit cold. Have you fired them yet? If so, how do you like them?
Yeah, I agree there are much better jackets than paper today. There is much better powder than black powder, but they still manufacture it for a reason. People like to shoot black powder in rifles designed and manufactured to shoot black powder. As to the effect of a paper patched bullet, one...
Yes, I do cast my bullets. I'm using pure lead for the '71 & "71/84 with BP. For the newer rifles I'm using WW with smokeless. As for the lube, I use my own formula of one part beeswax to one part lard. I know it sounds weird, but it seems to work very well with BP.
I recently started to load paper patched bullets. I have two rifles(Mauser 71 & 71/84) that were designed to fire that type of bullet so I thought I would give it a try. After doing a little research on the subject, I found there are several approaches to the same end. They all have their...
I shoot a Mauser 71/84. I know they can be loaded with smokeless, but they were designed for black. I'm kind of a purist. Once you get past the cost of the brass, it's a blast to shoot. Besides, I love the smell of burnt black powder. It's almost like perfume.
Thanks for all the responses to my question. I think the general consensus is that you "may" not have to, but it's better if you do.
I've been doing it all along, so it's probably a good idea to continue.
Kind of new to the reloading game (about a year and a half). It suddenly occurred to me that I may be wasting some of my time. Is it necessary to size and trim new brass?
Don't know if you want to make the trip, but Kingsbury has a very nice outdoor range. I'm in the Valparaiso area and it takes me about 45 min. to get there. I'm not sure, but I think the Blyth's indoor range in Valparaiso allows small cal. rifles. You might give them a call and find out.
