How about we end all freebies that people dont pay into and earn points to get (sit on your ass and you dont get crap), and then start penalizing people who are already milking the system but keep having kids.
We need slackers to stop having babies they cant afford to feed so that people with jobs/retirement/money dont have to support them.
There are too many broke people having kids. Plan for that ****. Its not like you freaking wake up one day and get an email that says, hey ass hole your baby will be dropped off via fedex in 2 weeks start saving now.
    Dip****s
If you truly "planned" to have a baby then you should sitting easy because you started saving for that baby like 2 years ago right? No? Then you shouldnt be having a kid. But people will still go out and have a brand new damn car or truck or tv, laptop, guns and then complain they are broke because of a new baby. Well no **** sherlock but the new baby didnt make you broke your dumb lack of budgeting did.
Be responsible or how the hell are you going to be a good parent.
Sorry, just is something that gets under my skin.
Im not ripping people who have it tight but still manage it and make it work. They are doing it. Bravo. Im talking about the people who have kids and immediately go on welfare or food stamps. Or the people overspending on bs stuff and then *****ing about being broke.

So to sum it up .. **** no. Im not giving people $1k a month. ****ing get a job, get 2 jobs, get 3 jobs. If you have a wife she can do the same. Theres no reason people cannot thrive in this country if you truly want to and are a hard worker. Even if you are one of the dumbest people ever you can still easily find a job making at least $15 an hour now. Like I said, get more than 1 job. Why would you settle for scraps when steak is out there for the taking? If you want to be a winner then go get it.
I have a friend that is going to college for a masters and also has 2 ****ing jobs!!! Kicking ass and will be (IS) a very successful person. Thats drive. Thats the American Spirit. Thats something to be proud of and celebrate.

Where do these geniuses think the money comes from? How sad we have a large group of morons who are not ashamed to show everyone how stupid they are. I don't want to call them a generation, because I know too many that come from "that generation" who have truly earned the title of Doctor of Medicine or PhD.

Not the worst idea, if you actually stuck to the concept of replacing ALL other government assistance with a single basic income. Like many things, though, I think it would fall apart on the particulars.

I have two big reservations apart from the obvious cost issue. First is the prospect of the UBI number becoming THE dominant political issue in the US, and getting us into a death spiral of people being elected solely by promising to raise it over and over again until the country collapses under the cost. The second is that I don't *really* believe all the other assistance programs will actually be discontinued. What happens when Mom blows all $1,000 on lotto tickets and booze and gets evicted with the kids? Are we just gonna say "tough ****, you got your $1,000, if you squander it you and your children suffer the consequences"? Doubtful.

I really don't care that much if a few people just want to be lazy and live on a shoestring free money income. We have plenty of useless people now, but most people will get jobs out of sheer boredom if nothing else. I just don't have any faith that the bleeding hearts will actually agree to allow people to fail AFTER they get their UBI for the month.

Any of you who think that all people would get the "guaranteed basic income" are living in a fantasy world.

...and yes, I know what the theorists say.

Not going to happen. Also, as noted above, it would only ever be given to current welfare recipients ON TOP OF current welfare...and again, yes, I know what they claim.

...and don't call it a wage. A wage is something you work for.

    great point.

It's my dream to develop a whole industry of labor-intensive craft production that is done in the back of a semi trailer. Move them into neighborhoods with high percentage of welfare recipients (including unemployment). They don't need transportation, their job comes to them. Climate controlled trailer and they can crank out widgets all day long, just like real employed people do.Then they can fill gaps in employment on resume with that, can learn skills, etc...

Yangs big thing is the coming wave of workers displaced by automation and AI. I don't share that concern but I don't mind if he wants to put a plan in place that only activates when robots are doing all the jobs, which I don't think is anytime soon.
No reason to dismiss ideas without engaging them, I thought Friedmans negative income tax to replace the current welfare system was a good idea.

Unfortunately, the Yangs of the world forget one of the more famous (and true) Thatcherisms to our collective peril

“The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”

If you know that down the track will be a massive train wreck, why even leave the station?

Replacing people with robots will seem less attractive to the captains of industry when the pitchforks and torches come out for them. Butlerian Jihad

I have never liked the idea of large groups of people paying $0 or negative income tax. Everyone should have to pay something so they have some skin in the game. People need to realize that nothing is free and if the government wastes money it is partly theirs.

To the where's the money coming from crowd, what I think I understand of the plan is this.

There's no ' new ' money being collected. The money is already being spent, it's about redirecting the hell out of it .
Things like stopping a lot of foreign interventions , etc .

The idea is there's a whole lot of automation coming coupled with the results of **** parenting , etc. People don't have common sense anymore., nobody wants to work the blue collar jobs , reasons.

Short and sweet, there's a whole lot of problems coming rapidly. We simply can't fix the mess all at once.
What we can do is try to reduce the amount of stress and suffering that will come because we all know how most folks react to change .

The $ 1, 000 would pay the most stressful bill most folks have , housing . The person could pay medical bills or whatever . The point is by reducing the amount of stress people are under we wind up with a nicer society.

The weather is getting screwy , geopolitics aren't getting easier , to quote my favorite superhero, ' you ****ed this planet into a coma ! '

Yang explained on last night's news that it would be funded by a 10% Value Added Tax to all goods and services.

Like if we establish a program to feed kids and call it Aid to Dependent Children and base the assistance on number of kids and Mom has to make less than a specified amount.
Then we create a program to subsidize food cost and call it Food Stamps and Mom still gets her original ADC payment amount even though her food costs went down.
But kids still come to school hungry so we create a School Lunch program for needy kids. Mom still gets to keep her allotment and spend it as she sees fit.
Then kids are hungry in the summer so we create a Summer Lunch program and Mom never has to pay for her kids food.
Taxpayers feel good about paying for hungry kids and Mom feels good about extra discretionary money she has now. Win - win for everybody.

    Could be anywhere
It wouldn't even come close to covering my taxes and they'd just tax me more to 'give' it to me. Typical greedy liberal take on what's mine is mine and whats yours is mine.

These people have the nerve to, out of one side of their mouth, say tariffs on China are hurting the economy but out of the other side of their mouth somehow a new 10% tax on consumption (without lessening the tax burden elsewhere) won't be a drag on the economy

It's Chavez's plan wrapped in prettier language, they think there are enough poor and lazy people near the bottom of the socio-economic strata that by directly buying their vote with wealth transfer they see a path to power. Even with oil wealth, Chavez and the Maduro found out Thatcher was right. And when push comes to shove, the elite aren't giving up their cush - so get off the streets
