Happened to a kid I knew, I "think" it was around 1985.
He hit his friend in the heart with a 22 while squirrel hunting.

    Very, very sad :(

It’s an absolute tragedy. I shutter when I think of all the poor clearing barrels that caught rounds from unloaded weapons- I can’t imagine the feeling for if it was a person any of those times.

I still believe that the fact everyone has agreed and accepted the idea that we NEED clearing barrels at L.E.O. and military sites is very indicative of a serious training problem. Because today somehow we cannot train a cop or a soldier how to safely operate their firearms?

What does this incident have to do with LEO or military? Oh that's right, you have never seen a non-cop do such a thing.

"Safe direction" is not enough. "Safe" is subjective and "direction" can change in a heartbeat.

Teach them the 4 Rules. Teach them to be safe, not cool.

17 year old trips and fires rifle into friend.

Teen found shot, killed in Will County church building | WGN-TV

Pitiful attempt at making your points there, Kirk. Nonsensical, in fact.

As reported, this failure wouldn't be even remotely predicated on a belief that the rifle was unloaded (as he was responding to a possible intruder) or trying to be "cool".

He didn't manage to keep it pointed in a safe direction or his finger off the trigger it seems. Those are the #1 and #2 priorities.

Either would have saved his cousin when he tripped.

    Fail.

So the utilization of a sand barrel for the administrative loading and/or unloading of firearms is indicative of a serious training problem? Please explain.

Hmmm... this thread fell apart quickly.

They hear something, the armed older kid is following the unarmed younger kid to go investigate? That doesn't make sense.
We don't know enough to make too many judgements.

I am having difficulty understanding the logic of clearing barrels indicating poor training?
When in a congested area they are used as your “safe direction” in order to clear your weapons.

Yeah guess it has nothing to do with the thread!

Slips, trips, and falls are a major cause of workplace injuries. If that extension cord was not in the way this whole mess would have been prevented.

People think a safety is fool proof.
Use the barrels..........and not the brain.

Tie that to the accident? Maybe.

Did the kid have the gun on safe and finger out of the trigger guard?
Too many think off the trigger is also out of the trigger guard.

It could be that the only rule broken was loss of muzzle control ( gun impacted something and went off- without trigger being touched?)

Dunno what all was banged into in the dark after tripping. He didn't maintain muzzle control, but might have put forth some effort.
    or maybe not.

Why the hell was the gun guy behind the non gun guy........................?????

He didn't know the environment, the other acting as scout?

Lots of unknowns. Probably multiple errors involved.

I have taken some tumbles while out hunting.
    Muzzle control the #1 focus.
    Maintained.
Unfortunately in doing that, the damage to me might have been greater.
    You just friggin' do it.
    Muzzle control..............no matter what.
    Today people don't comprehend "absolutes".
    Everything is to be challenged.
Legally somebody with deep pockets is to blame.
