If it's solely for plinking around, why spend more money than you have to?

1911's should always be .45 if they are to be used for defense, but as a back yard gun, go 9mm, save a few bucks and have fun.

Well nearly one day into the poll, and its becoming clear why gun shops don't keep 9mm 1911 in stock. It looks like there isn't a large demand for a 1911 in 9mm. I always thought it was because they were in low supply. I recently have had my hands on two STI Sentry 9mm 1911's and was really impressed with the quality. The recoil was dreamy...

AllenM ... I wouod be very happy to meet up with you to see what the .40 1911 recoils...

Well here is an out of the box answer. But if you don't reload it will probably fall in the 10mm category. I just put one together in 357 Sig. 100% reliable and combined with the weight of a 1911 this is an awesome fun gun to shoot.
You can up load or down load it for what ever shooting you want to do.
Right now I am loading at 175 power factor and the recoil to me is about perfect.

That is not a hot hot load for it either. even though I love my 9mm 1911 this gives me a ton more umph at will but can be downloaded to 9mm specs as well.
I am surprised that how well this feels to shoot to be quite honest.

This was a full mag with 6 bullets it the one hole. this is 20 yards unsupported (yes I pulled 2 )

If the 357 Sig would have been available in the year 1911 JMB would have certainly ran it through his gun :)

Oh P.S. I have a .40 barrel for this gun also you would be welcome to shoot it if it would help you decide before shelling out some cash.

I bet that bottleneck cartridge would help the sometimes finicky 1911s run like a top.
Even better would be 9x25 Dillon. The longer OAL the gun was designed for, plus the bottleneck. And 125gr JHPs at 1700fps and 800+ft/lbs? Fuhgeddabouddit!

When it comes to 1911's and from the ones I have owned and fired. If you get one it's gotta be a .45, and that's exactly what I voted for!:D

To each their own, but I disagree. the 1911 platform is so awesome why limit it to one caliber.
    Glock and M&P, XD's don't :)

If John Moses Browning wanted the 1911 to shoot anything other than the .45 ACP, he would have designed another pistol. Oh wait! He did... The Browning Hi-Power 9mm.

He did, the .38 auto was the real design , the Army wanted a .45 so he bored it out and made .45ACP ..

One of my Para 1911's is a .40 Limited. In very fast firing courses, it will sometimes hick up and have a misfeed. The .45 version never fails. I got round nosed .40 bullets from Rainier bullets company and load them a little longer than spec, to try to get to close to the same cartidge OAL as the .45. I figured that since the geometry of the pistol was designed for a certain length, that length should work better. The overlength reloads work, you cannot get the pistol to malfunction with the longer .40 cartridges. I don't know if the same would apply to a single stack.

Well since the pot is stirred... what is the deal with the 2011... people liked the 1911 platform and needed extra bullets ???

I've owned several other platforms of handguns. The 1911 just seems about perfect for pleasure/fun/recreational shooting purposes.

Since you have a .45 already you dont need to worry about power factor just use your .45 when you need to meet a certain power factor. Go with a 9mm .Of course you already knew what my answer would be.

But I'm interested in how you voted! Now that you have that sweet 9mm 1911, what's your verdict?

10 I didn't vote because my caliber isn't up there

I'm sorry I didn't include your favorite caliber! I didn't think it would be anyones favorite, I'm beginning to think it may be second behind .45. I will see if I can add it to the poll.

    Edit: I don't think I can edit a poll.
