I've found the wood double diamond checkered grip as good as it gets for my hands. It's an all weather grip. rain or shine, even oily hands they work well and don't throw the gun position off in my hand. Consistent anchoring in my grip.
Every hand is different though. What works best for you might not work for me.

I've gotten tons of grips from lots of places (ten 1911s and I changed the grips on all of them)...
For texture, I really like RAASCO grips:

For looks alone, custom stuff from West Virginia Wood Arts:

I'm a big Strider knife fan, so the Simonich ones get my vote.

Here's a pic of them on my old TRP next to my DB DGG and SNG DGG:

That's a good looking set of grips. ;)

I'm a big fan of the VZ Operator IIs and Aliens. Or anything VZ, really. Get on their email list and they send out discount codes pretty regularly. I'm sure there will be something for memorial day.

Applied Ballistics in Lafayette has gotten a selection of fancy 1911 wood grips, different woods, fancy checkering and engraving, etc. Not too bad on the price either. It is always nice to see them in person next to your pistol before you buy something nice like that.

Aluma Grips...I have them on both my 1911 and my Beretta 92F. Great prices and great service. They offer custom services at reasonable prices and have quick turn times...2-3 weeks. This is the company that makes the aluminum grips for many factory brands.

Ebay :) There really is a very large selection and even some really nice exotic wood grips from out-of-country sellers for very inexpensive prices.
