I agree with the get a good 1911. I purchased a Springfield Range Officer as my first 1911. I shot great right out of the box but got better after 200 rounds. I had Churchmouse do a trigger job on it and wow what a difference it made.

It is a sickness though. I bought one and within six months I now have three. Two Springfield's and one Colt :spend::spend:

    You love......I know you do.

Seriously, there are a few mid range 1911's you can look at. Save some money or as SkullDaddy said....sell off some stuff.
Every person I know with an RIA likes them, shoots them but I have worked on everyone of them and their friends guns as well. They are OK for the money but they will let you down once you have shot a good Ruger/S&W/Springer etc.

And once you get your 1911!, , , save, pimp out the midgets, sell a kidney, then give it to Churchmouse! He'll make it shoot as smooth as Butter!! Besides, he needs the money to keep himself in canes, prune juice and perpetration H!:fogey:

If you want to gut it, a Rock Island is extremely good. Lots of folks love 'em the way they come. The Mueschke and Mason internals are not for me, so I use the frame and slide.

If you want something more, save a couple grand and get a Baer, Brown or Wilson.

The best you can get is to send an older Colt into Berryhill. He'll work with you on what you want.

If you plan to shoot it a lot, avoid the aluminum frame.

Well by golly what do you know. I googled it and TTAG had a picture of a Range Officer compact. Well add that to my list.

You and me, both... I'm hoping a 9mm is in the works for next year, cause I want my next 1911 as a 9mm. Tried one and I have an itch! LoL

9mm in an officers sized gun would be perfect.

What I really want is a Smith E series roundbutt in 9mm. Come on Smith, build it and they will buy.

I didn't even scratch the surface of what was at the convention to fondle. I had the wife with me and we were shopping for her. .45 acp compact pistols were not on the list.

Any time I've wasted money, it's been because I decided to buy cheap instead of holding out for quality. I'm not knocking RIA. I have one and like it, but if I were to have only one 1911, it would not be the RIA. If you are set on an aluminum framed gun, you might need to rule RIA out anyway. Kimbers can be had for not too much over the price of an RIA. IIRC, I think I paid around $800 for my Kimber Compact Stainless II. It's been a great gun and is probably the most carried 1911 I own. Your satisfaction with whatever you buy will most likely be much higher if you hold out and buy quality. There are lots of great options for less than a grand in the 1911 world right now.

Now, if you are looking for a plinking 1911 that you have no intention of carrying, an RIA can be a very affordable way into the 1911 world. If I had to sell all but one of my 1911s, the RIA would not be the keeper.

Edit: That $800 Kimber did not have night sights or front strap checkering. Both of those tend to come with Sigs so a $900 Sig compares very well to an $800 Kimber.

Have been wanting to get into the 1911 game for some time and of course I would love to spend a butt load of $$ but can't afford to do that at this time. I'm mainly wanting a 4 in model possibly an aluminum frame but with night sights. My question is should I just wait and save up until this winter for a Kimber or Sig or should I jump the gun for a RIA. I've shot one RIA 4in model and it shot better than what I was expecting but it had blade sights and I unaware if there are night sights available for them.
Any thoughts or suggestions will help.
    Thanks and CARRY ON!!!

Change "1911" to "wife" and then think about your question..

"Hey guys I am wanting a good woman to make my wife and I want to know if I should kind of wait around to get the one I want or should I answer one of these ads in the back of my Guns and Ammo that advertises "Phillipine women dying to marry American men" or "Russian women that can't wait to come to America and marry guys with good credit." Any suggestions?":)::)::twocents::)::):

Same answer. If all your are looking for is something cheap to go out and plink with....... If you decide you want something better later you can always trade up. Might be worth keeping the cheap one as a beater. Doesn't matter how many parts you put into one they are still not worth much.

so much wrong with that analogy. I will go back to my corner now.

At least the thread is about 1911s. If this were discussing Glocks and M&Ps then no telling where it would go.

Actually Mrs. VERT will not be insulted. I have never traded a 1911 and my pistols get the best of everything. Life is too short to shoot an ugly gun and I think all my 1911s are fine looking arms. My taste is anything but cheap.

Now I will end this analogy before Powder reminds me yet again about how he can outshoot me with my own gun. We ain't goin' there.
