I need a 40 with a lot less recoil than the S&W D 40.. This 23 oz. gun is a shhoter, but it's WRECKING:( my hand. Which would be a tamer pistol in 40 caliber for me?

Are you married to the idea of a .40? I've found most .40's to have more recoil than a .45.

If the 45 had a higher cap. It might work. I like the 9's I've owned many makes many models, just looking for a nice gentle (oxymoron) 40.

If you look at grains of powder to grains of lead, the .40 is a hot load compared to .45. If you reload, you can play with reduced powder recepies though you'll reduce effectiveness in the process. (don't have any to suggest)
If you're dead set on keeping the .40, I might be more inclined to working more on hand and forearm strengthening, rather than trying to tame the load though.

Not saying anything against you. Just making suggestions. My fav sidearm is my XD(m) .40 and I initially had a difficult time with it for the same reasons.

I have a glock 23 and don't feel the recoil is to bad. But everybody is different. Try and shoot as many as possible until you find one you like.

    Reload less powder

If you reload, you might try a 200grain 40cal bullet. Less powder than your typical 165 or 180. The felt recoil is less. Or get a heavier gun.
The wife goes off like an A-Bomb every time I mention Re-Load, so I guess I'll just get a heavier gun and a good pair of gloves. Thanks for the input.:draw:

Might try the MP in .40. The MP has a rep for being a very soft shooter. My 9mm is...and every time I have let someone shoot it, they comment on just that.

The full-sized Glock pistols are some of the mildest recoiling .40 pistols I've ever shot. That, and a Beretta 96.

I agree, I have a G22 full size Glock in .40 and it's not that bad in my opinion. I have also shot the Berreta and it's a good heavy gun as well, soaks up a lot of the recoil!

Diametrically opposed to my former Kahr CW-40. Ouch! And my Walther P99... interesting recoil on that one. sharp, up, and even wanted to torque to the side a bit (may just be wrist-alignment when shooting 1-handed, though)

The .40 caliber is snappy by its nature I have found, I prefer .45acp but I do like shooting my G22. It's a nasty round for sure!

G22 is a smooth shooter. Everyone is different when it comes to felt recoil though. My EDC is a G27 and I also have the G23. I enjoy shooting both of them and I do not notice much recoil. Sure it is more snappy than a 9mm, but it does not feel bad to me at all. I have seen others that will hand the 27 back after one shot and say no more. Everyone has their own opinion, just try to shoot a few other makes and models and see what works best for you.
