By the time you buy the parts, you would be money ahead to buy one with the front end already converted. Not to mention sparing yourself a major pain in the ass.

Actually........... I did the math. There is only $10 difference between going with the standard saiga vs. the IZ340 version.

Yes, that is true, but you don't need much, and this was 'doing it right', not using bolt on parts. In that regard, the expensive part is the back end anyway. You can do the front end with a hammer and a drift.

Here is my new Saiga (the bottom one). It started life as an IZ-340 model.

Does anyone know why the Saigas dont have the vented gas blocks?
Top is the Saiga w/ no hole. Bottom is a SGL w/ 4 holes (2 holes on each side) in the gas block.

Later models moved the gas vent holes to the block. Also later gas blocks Funnel the gas more perpendicularly than the earlier blocks that pushed the gas at more of a 45 degree angle. Supposedly it helps prevent premature erosion. You can see the difference if you compair your (way awesome by the way) saigas to a Mak90.

? The switch to 90 deg gas port was because the 45's were experiencing bullet shear when they went to the 5.45 round.

Now they use 90's on all of the rifles. Could be for a number of reasons, but ease of manufacture and commonality spring right to mind.

I still need to covert my saiga over, I have a muzzle break to put on once the barrel is threaded, need a new trigger and guard before I am able to move the group up. I've watched a lot of videos, just not sure it's something I want to do my self, I do know I want someone else to thread the barrel

I needed to switch it up a bit... I was getting tired of the same black stocks sets over and over again. Like my new $26ea 45rd ((10)) mags?
