This is not new. Starke County has had an ordinance prohibiting firearms on county owned property (the annex, courthouse, sheriff's department, the old sheriff's department that was remodeled for offices) for some time. Nobody was checking for firearms until they remodeled the courthouse and then it was just in that building, but it was prohibited there anyway due to the courtroom being in that building.

I remember seeing the ordinance on their web site a few years ago. They are just placing security personnel at the meetings now.

Minutes from Dec 3rd indicated a desire to revise that ordinance to include this annex.
Not clear on the actual wording in the revision or the specifics of the minutes from Dec 17th (not posted yet, probably need to be reviewed/accepted in Jan).

Seems that they've begun the scanning anyway, and voted for the additional $28k per year for the 3rd security guard.
Looking to add additional cameras/recording (and money for that I'm sure) as well.

Other than the courthouse, what other Starke County buildings are there?

The annex across the street houses the room where most county meetings take place (commissioners, council, planning commission, BZA, PTABOA, etc.) and several offices such as auditor, surveyor, assessor, treasurer, planning commission/bza, recorder, EMS, Veterans assistance, EMA. There is the former jail/sheriff's department that is another building that has been remodeled and now houses some offices...I think probation mostly. The courthouse has the courtroom, clerk's offices, 4-H extension office, prosecutor (I think). The new jail/sheriff's department also has a courtroom but I don't think it has ever been used. Everything but the new jail is located in town right by the courthouse.

So the ordinance mom posted is from 2011, and as you mention seems properly worded.

Recently (December 2018), Starke county has decided to extend additional security & "scanners" to the Annex building where they hold meetings (no courthouse). Including an additional Security Officer to staff that post.

Minutes from Dec 3rd 2018 and the closing of secondary entrances, resulting in a single access point with "scanners", seem to point to a "No firearms beyond this point" either in place now or coming soon.

The specifics of the revised ordinance have yet to surface, (as well as minutes from Dec 17th 2018 meeting where approved).

It's not a 24/7 thing. INGO is a great place to rally the troops. Do what you can, never give up.

Mom45, we might just have to attend the next meeting and point out where they are running afoul of the law....just need a little guidance.
