I am hoping to start seeing them in a week or two. I am spot checking my hit spots I usually find them early at. But nothing yet. We need a few more wet damp days. I am trying to avoid mowing the yard because every year I mow early I never find many. But I am doing to need to mow soon.
A buddy of mine moved to NY this last December and I have always done great over there on his property. I will check over there this weekend. He won't be around to compete with this year! And I have his consent to hunt too!! I can almost taste them now!!
Picked about 4# today, shoulda had 6 but a buddy beat me to a elm I killed. The ridges and ridge top elms are dry, creek bottoms were the ticket today.
I'm up to about a dozen little ones. None in my 'normal' spots. Found a few out in the middle of my yard which was odd, I think that may mean that the soil temps in the deep woods where I normally find them aren't high enough yet for the mother lode! In years past I could walk back to the same spot and spend 20 minutes and walk out with 4-6#. This year so far I've been in the woods looking for 6 hours total with little to show for it.
I should be able to get back out on Tuesday after work to try again.
cooking tip on these bigguns. Mix diced jalapeno peppers and cream cheese, stuff the cap with mix, roll in flour and corn meal a fry. Mushroom poppers are hard to beat.
found these this evening.......the are over 1 1/2#........that puts me at 8 1/2#...with a count of 130...just like to split, bread and fry the big one with mayo on bread.....mushroom sammy....
I'm so jealous! My parents have maybe found under 10 this year and I don't have enough of a wooded area around my apartment to find any unfortunately. I love morels and am happy to see most of you found quite a few.
