If you're going to "zipper", then you should be pacing the cars in the eventual merge lane - and those cars should be leaving a safe driving distance between them and the cars in front of them. Then, and only then, does zippering work.

The opposite of zippering may be called the "accordion" effect. When a car passes a line of vehicles moving more slowly, and then forces himself in at the front of the line, every car behind him must react. That reaction results in reduced safe-driving distance between cars. When multiple cars do so, those chain reactions result eventually in standstill traffic, because all of the available safe-driving distance (and merge space) is gone.
