It's not a crime to carry a rifle openly but I'd take notice, mostly curiosity at first, like what kind of gun it is, etc. I would pay more attention if you start handling the rifle, checking it's loaded, racking the bolt in public or having it at the ready.

Why don't we start with open carry of holstered handguns first, and when that is accepted gradually move our way up to open carry of rifles? Open carry of handguns wouldn't faze me as it just seems like a self-defense item. If I'm somewhere and a guy walks in with a rifle yeah, I'm going to get a little on edge.

I don't mind people open carrying. Just that they have some training on how to prevent someone from snagging their gun.

We should all schedule a place, and when to go,, at differnt times on the same day. In case any griff is given, we got each others back.( not fire power, just knowing the laws)

I recommend you go take a look at the "Where did you OC today?" threads, there are two currently, to see how many members here are OCing and where every day. This occurs regularly. It occurs to me that your last sentence there is the exact reason I'm advocating the normalization of long arm carry.

I don't mind people open carrying. Just that they have some training on how to prevent someone from snagging their gun.

Can you provide something that shows that this is a regular occurance? It's not that I don't appreciate the idea of people getting training, but you're only basing the option to OC on having it. I don't think conditional carry is the right idea. If there was a plague of retention issues, then I might advocate a little heavier for training, but never mandatory.

Cool, I guess it's time for me to move up. :smileak:

Just what I was thinking. :rockwoot:

Here's my thought. I open carry a handgun. I know that a rifle is a better self defense tool. It's more powerful, and holds more rounds. What is keeping me from carrying my AR? Society's perceived idea of normalcy. I should carry a rifle and a handgun. The handgun is useful for up close stuff, and the rifle better suited for active shooter scenarios, and distance shooting.

I would primarily use the handgun for personal protection, but if I'm hearing shots fired, I'm responding with the rifle up.

What is keeping me from doing it? Should be nothing. I don't care if someone gets upset over it. Grow a pair. It's an aluminum block with a steel tube and some plastic handles.

After over a year of open carrying a handgun, I've had no negative encounters. Maybe it's time to move up.

YEAH, let's open carry our AR's! What the heck, it's legal. And while we are at it let's OC our handguns and our AR's. Yeah, that is legal also. And ah, oh yeah, let's wear ski masks, no laws against OC'ing handguns and AR's while we wear ski masks! Let the wimps have their heart attacks, tough.

Better yet, let's OC our handguns and AR's while wearing ski masks and several of us run into a bank. We all know the no gun signs carry no weight of law in Indiana. That is not illegal!

Yeah, let's all OC our handguns and AR's while wearing BLACK ski masks and run into a bank yelling "WE ARE EXERCISING OUR RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS!"

Surely that will convince the fence sitters to join our side of the 2A fight!

    Don't you think?

I have a friend. She is quite intelligent, speaks two languages and has been a registered nurse for many years. She also is an avid bicycle rider. Rides 100 miles or more a week. Frequently I will see her riding her bike on one of the busy 4 lane streets in our home town. I have asked her why. Her answer, "I have as much right to be on that street as any motorist. It is totally legal!

She is correct of course. There are no laws preventing her from riding her bike on a busy street as long as it is not marked no non-motorized vehicles.

Just because you can, should you?

I stood behind a guy at a fast food restaurant who had a 1911 hanging out of his back pocket of his jeans just about ready to fall out. It was not a pretty sight and I am a gun owner, to a non gun owner it would have been very offensive. To me it is best to be covert.

I see no value in showboating your AR around town. By doing this we are no better than the media and we are only adding fuel to the fire. Leave the gun porn at the range where it can be appreciated by others who care and enjoy it.

By soliciting attention and emotional responses from other citizens who are scared from what they naively believe in the news, no good can come from this. It does not speak well of a person as a "responsible gun owner" to be waiving a weapon in public.

Although I know it's our right, I do believe there is a time and a place for all things. I feel strongly that some ideas, although met with good intentions, often have ill-conceived outcomes. Carry your guns, but don't do it just for the sake of soliciting public response. That's not what this freedom is about. Use your own moral compass and find your own way.

...It does not speak well of a person as a "responsible gun owner" to be waiving a weapon in public.

If the word carrying didn't sound irrational enough to make your point and you resorted to choosing more creative verbs to embellish, you must realize it is you attempting to borrow from the media playbook here, right? :dunno:

...Carry your guns, but don't do it just for the sake of soliciting public response. That's not what this freedom is about.

OK. I'll carry for the sake of soliciting public response

    ...and
    protection from tyranny. :)
