I'm a little surprised to hear that it's your choice.

Yeah, nobody is forced to carry a long gun for us. Way more people want to carry rifles than they have training slots in patrol rifle programs so there's no shortage of volunteers. I think everyone still qualifies on shotguns, and you can either get an issued one or bring your own from home. When I started, there weren't enough shotguns to go around but I think there's plenty now.

It seems to me that if a firearm is not secured in your HOUSE and a person gets shot , the owner faces charges , its your respondsibility in your car also , I would assume?

Who . . . who is telling you this? Something you read in paper?

Under Indiana law no, but change facts to juvenile that you knew was knucklehead, maybe.

    Wut?

The only scenario in Indiana where this may apply is something like you leave your gun out and your toddler finds it and shoots themselves with it, resulting in a neglect of dependent charge. There is no charge for "unsecured gun" or whatever you're thinking of in this state.

May be transposing "Dangerous Possession" into a crime from another state?

I don't think anyone believes the victim Deputy did anything wrong here, but if I catch Sheriff Bob running his cake hole like LPD does about how "highly trained" cops are with guns, it will not go well for him at a press conference.

Don't think Bob would be so foolish, that is an LPD monopoly.

He's maybe thinking of other states that might have implemented such laws, and confusing it with Indiana.
