When LEO's do secure a rifle in their department issued vehicle, is the apparatus that secures/carries the rifle department issued? Or does the LEO have autonomy to purchase and use any commercially available system to carry/secure rifle inside passenger space?

That question is department specific. There are a number of secured long gun racks available for vehicles.

"Sheriff considering policy changes after gun stolen from deputy's car"
LET me add, any policy that doesn't STRONGLY secure weapons left in an off duty patrol car in an unsecured area against quick theft is a bad policy that needs to be changed.
AT least make stealing them something that takes a long enough time to make the risk too high.

This is a no brainer, as an off duty patrol car in an unsecured area is a tempting target for criminals.

We have a bad policy. I would hope after this embarrassment our Sheriff will make the necessary changes.

I like Bob, he's a good man and concerned cop. Being Sheriff means that there are 10,000 plates to spin. I just hope the weapon is quickly recovered.

IIRC the last rifle that TCSD had stolen, LPD got it back in a couple of days.

Almost always department provided if it's built into the vehicle (ie, a rack) but varies more for trunk mounted options.

I don't carry a long gun any longer due to concerns about no good way to secure it in my currently issued vehicle.
