Even on Post you could only buy 3.2% !

I went to Altus AFB once you talk about in the middle of nowhere everyone was sad I was sad for them the people in town were sad for them. I was like man you guys got screwed this is worse than Dugway.

I managed to avoid OK (except for driving across it twice going to and from a school in Shreveport, LA) for my 21.5 years in the USAF. Altus and Vance were really in the middle of nowhere. We almost ended up in OK City (Tinker AFB) but some happy coincidences (a retirement and another troop had their previous career field trying to send them to Korea) landed us at Langley AFB, Va.

I will guarantee you one thing.
Being stationed in Iceland is worse.
I'm just glad I was only there for nine weeks.

What? I spent 3 years (89-90 and 96-98) in Iceland. Second time was with family, it was pretty good. Went there in 96 to get out of Wichita, Kansas. When were you there?

Years ago, while visiting family in the city, we went to a restaurant that was on Lake Hefner. I wonder if it was the same one...

I lived about 90 miles south of Oklahoma City for several years and only occasionally visited the city while living there but I as I remember it there is only one Lake Hefner it must be the same one!

3.2% Beer is all can get in the great state of OK.
They are very strict on carrying in a bar vs restaurant they also require a training class that’s regulated by the state police and local sheriff. I was exempt from having to obtain a license or attend the training but the Provost Marshal required us to do so. The class was were good it covered all the basics and I had to “qualify”. Strange thing in the law you qualify on a Derringer or revolver or automatic and nothing bigger than a .45 is allow to be carried.

The 3.2% alcohol content beer thing is about to become history. My sister owns a convenience store near a lake outside of Fort Sill and she was telling me that that had just been repealed and I believe that takes effect July 1st

. As to the handgun training I looked into it while I still live there and it look like it was pretty thorough although rather expensive. Also if I remember correctly they would allow you to qualify on a specific type of weapon being a revolver or a semi-auto; if you qualified with a revolver that's all you were allowed to carry but if you qualified with a semi-auto you could carry a semi-auto or any other type of handgun.

And yes, Altus is out in the middle of nowhere and that's tough to do in a state that over half of the state is out in the middle of nowhere. Tinker might not be so bad nowadays it looks like Oklahoma City is actually turning into a pretty decent town.

Yeah if you qualified with a auto you could carry anything you wanted.
IMO the training was good covered all the basics safety, storage, weapon selection, holsters, ammo, state laws regarding use of force a written test and live fire about 8 hrs or so.

I salute my fellow USAF brethren, and respectfully suggest that a year at a remote NATO assignment in Turkey was truly an armpit of the world deployment.
However, I was proud to be one of the original Murted Animals ...... a mindset of debauchery that's still celebrated to this day ! ;)

That would have been 1979 I believe.
When we readied for deployment, our Msgt told us, "There's a good-looking woman behind every tree in Iceland.
When we landed we found out that there ARE no trees in Iceland. Only bushes about 4 feet tall.

We were also mostly confined to base.
Unless you had a rank of E-6 or above you were not allowed on the streets after curfew, which was 11:00pm.
If you were found on the streets after curfew you would be arrested, period.

Also, the Icelandic people did not care for foreigners.
Every last Icelandic adult on the island at the time were blond haired, blue-eyed, and over 6 feet tall.
If you did not fit that description, you would not even get the time of day from a local.
They would not even talk to service persons unless forced to.

    EVERYTHING was expensive.
When we DID manage to get off-base, a 12oz can of Coca Cola was $7.50, and this was 1979!

It was an experience I wouldn't trade, but I have no desire to return.

It got better but took a while. Curfew was still there 89-90, gone by 96. I know from guys who were at the Hofn base (931st Air Control Squadron maybe) they could only go off-base once week. When we left, we padlocked it and drove away.

You'd think since if it wasn't for us they'd have had to learn German the Icelanders would've been a little more grateful. It was better 96-98. I will say when I was there in 89-90 right after Tom Clancy wrote Red Storm Rising, in that situation we'd have had to shoot half the Icelanders. Socialists with no military are hard for me to trust.

What I love most about the libtard news media is that they almost always put in a sentence like: “The case has been referred to the local prosecutor to see if any charges will be filed against the armed citizen who shot the original shooter.” The idiots in the media never stop. It makes my head hurt . PS: Great job to the two armed citizens!
