First, can you define what a "budget" rifle is to you? I am a strong believer in buy once cry once.

Here are some recommendations at different price points.
    $500 or under:
I would suggest taking a hard look at the ruger american, countless people are having excellent performance. Not to mention a growing market of aftermarket parts and stocks.
or a used tikka t3. The tikkas have an accuracy guarantee and i can personally vouch for this. ( i have a tikka ctr in .308 that is a half moa gun all day long with factory ammo)

    $1000 or under:
Tikka ctr in .308 or 6.5 CM. Period

Very partial to tikka if that was not apparent. Hope this helps, and keep us updated with what route you went.

    .
    1) You need lower rings. That scope is mounted so high you will have a chin weld to be able to see through the optic.

    2) Add a stock pack and some foam under the rear of it to bring your cheek upward, and simultaneously level the comb.

As mentioned above, i would definitely lower that scope, with a positive cheek weld you will be a much more consistent shooter. What ammo did you shoot, and how did it perform? Lets see some pictures brother.
