i would choose 1911 and if you want 9mm then sig makes what your looking for so does Taurus . but i really like the sig models and can be had in 9mm or 45 cal for around 900.00 and they are pretty well loaded up with everything a growing boy needs

I carried the Taurus PT99 one winter. I know about Taurus copy so don't bash yet. I loved the mag capacity in the area I was working and late hours. (52nd and Keystone)
It was a very dependable and accurate shooter. I never had any issues with it.
Because of the wet weather and size I carried it in a shoulder rig w/double mag pouch.
It was the only handgun I've ever carried that by the end of the day I was glad to take it off. It flat wore me down. Tired shoulders and overall size were too much for me.
Now I carry a .45 1911 in a shoulder rig in bad weather and don't even notice it until I bend over and the weight shifts forward. Just my experience with both.

This is apples and oranges. The 1911 is .45 which is almost 2x the cost of 9mm that the 92fs shoots. The 1911 is a single stack while the 92fs is double. The .45 is a bigger round than the 9mm and creates bigger holes in zombies. Both are great guns that have served our armed forces over the years and both sides have their die hard fanboys. I'd recommend finding a friend with both or renting them and doing a side by side comparison for what personally suits you the best.

Or like the wise posts before me have stated, get both.

How many rounds do you want to carry? MecGar makes flush-fit 18 round magazines for the Beretta. I have 5 of them.

Both are good pistols, and either would serve you well.

You can't go wrong with either. My very first I ever bought was a 1911 so that's why I voted for it. I've owned and sold two of each type of gun and there's nothing wrong with either.

What you really want is a Beretta 92. You want one real bad, but you should buy a 1911. I happen to have a Beretta 92 but would love to have a 1911. Do you see where this is going?

I voted the 92FS. I know, I know, John Browning would be kicking me in the pants right now, but I am a Beretta/Ruger guy. (I would buy the Beretta, then go buy the Springfield 1911 "Champion" for a daily carry, but don't tell anyone I said that):):

Depending on your size and build, either in full size can be concealed fairly well. I have a Taurus copy, and have carried it IWB on occasions, as well as my 1911 government. If caliber is of a concern, 1911s can be had in everything from .50 GI down to 9mm (or even 22), so affordable practice ammo argument is kinda a wash too.
The best way to decide would be to shoot both, and see what fits you better. Most newer shooters that I have stepped up to larger caliber handguns with seem to do better with the 1911, but there is always the exception to the norm.
Best answer is to get both, or even several versions of both.

I carried a 92 in the military. Back then I thought it was great but after shooting a few different models since then. I would get a 1911. Unless you are joining the military the 1911 is going to get more range time.

If you want a steel frame 9mm I would suggest you rent a CZ-75 and see how it feels. A little cheaper too.

My son bought his first gun last weekend, a beretta 96a1. Both of us just started shooting a few months ago and were hitting bullseyes with this gun. I don't think it was skill i think it's a very nice gun for the money.

I LOVE both.....1911 is a favorite as well as the 92 which I carry daily and have many thousands of rounds through as well thanks to the military........the thing is, you want to be a proficient shot with your carry weapon...that being said you can shoot considerably more practice rounds for a LOT less money with the 92....also, with the 9mm you have considerably less recoil/muzzle flip which means you will have faster target acquisition in between shots...which also means faster follow up shots and they are more likely to be a little more accurate......... you could also look into some 9mm 1911's......compacts like the Springfield EMP or the Colt New Agent either one in 9mm are personal favorites......Taurus puts out a 9mm full size 1911 along with some other brands too.............but I personally still carry the 92 every day even though I love 1911's

I love the 1911. I hate the 92. But this is me.

I voted other. Although I love the 1911, it is not the simplest platform around and for a first gun it might not be the best choice. It is incredibly reliable and I love it but it might not be your cup-of-tea.

I hate the 92. I don't like anything about it. I shot one once and have no desire to shoot another.

Again this is all me. You and others may have different opinions.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

When I served in the army I was issued a 1911, and had to suffer through the change over to the 92 have way through my enlistment. 1911 wins hands down (IMO), but being your first, I can see the appeal of the 92. If you go for the 92, start the slush fund now for the 1911 to keep your choices open.

Well, my 1911 is a Para P12, so it's 12+1 and a blocky grip, but I can palm a basketball, and I have kung fu grip, so neither the grip nor the recoil challenge me. I'm looking to get a couple of P14 mags for followup. It conceals awesomely at my 8 in IWB. The current Para equivalent is the Warthog. Just make them both from bacon and get it over with.
