Well you know my vote as far a a folder. The Tyrade has impressed me. But if I had to vote on a fixed blade I would vote for the SOG Navy seals knife. Just by reputation alone. Its been put to the test and passed. I plan to own one to abuse.
I Kinda think this question is a great one but what really is the best for under 100$ really a matter of opinion. I believe the best knife is the one that gets used. :)

Fixed blade? Still currently coming around, would have to be one of the smaller from Scrap Yard.

Folder? Honestly, short of a FRN-handled Spyderco spring run of ZDP, then I would have to pick a Kershaw Lahar.

Good, solid knife equal to other blades that cost $150-$300. It is VG-10 steel. I like S30v - my carry folders are 10-to-1 S30V. Still, VG10 holds a place in my heart. The Lahar also has G10 grips.

    $60 at Grand Prairie Knives.

Tyler - Where were you finding a new Manix, before they were discontinued, for under $100? Suggested Retail was $200. I remember seeing them as low as $120 but I would have "stocked up" at <$100.

    benchmade griptilian
    benchmade mini-nitrous striker
    lonewolf diablo
    spyderco endura with zdp189 steel
    spyderco manix
    spyderco tenacious

so basically spyderco and benchmade IMO for under $100

a manix 2 for $82? but it's pre sale only

Ah... A Manix 2. The new Manix 2. One of those big, (original) hunk of Manix, I don't believe ever saw <$100 except used.

for a folder I would DEFINITELY go with either a spyderco endura or delica in ZDP-189 steel. that is the best value under $100.

ZDP-189 with a FRN grip. I've got one in my pocket right now. (Jess Horn ZDP Sprint Run from 07 (06?)) It's a great, light weight folder.

    SPYDERCO C90PBLE STRETCH BLUE FRN ZDP-189 KNIFE-NEW! - eBay (item 330360870429 end time Oct-17-09 07:21:07 PDT)

I really like this, but if you want everyday preformance, and you want to be able to handle most tasks I would buy these four knives. total cost under 100 bucks and will do nearly everything you may run into

Ontario Knife Co USA Orange 18" Field Machete/Machette - eBay (item 350252978022 end time Sep-22-09 15:22:19 PDT)

MORA RESCUE KNIFE STAINLESS STEEL DAYGLO with Sheath - eBay (item 250390059286 end time Oct-11-09 05:23:05 PDT)

Victorinox Swiss Army Farmer Knife Limited Edition NEW - eBay (item 220451142620 end time Oct-10-09 11:23:16 PDT)

    Spyderco .. Tenacious C122GP, PLAIN-EDGE, G-10 & NIB - eBay (item 230377993196 end time Sep-21-09 22:08:53 PDT)

With those four you should be good to go, all hold edge well and are sharp. the tenacious and Victornox farmer are great EDC knives, and the mora and Machete can easily be carried in a pack in your vehicle, I would reccomend you get a good sharp job done on the machette and that you purchase the sheath the ontario makes that is plastic not cloth, and you'll be great.

but inline with the OP you have to pick only ONE, better yet pick one folder and one fixed. BTW I LOVE the tenacious best "value" knife out there IMO. now if they only made one in better steel.

I picked the strech as one knife, in amonth or two thos blue handled ZDP-189 bladed knives should be able to be found around a hundred bucks, a bit smaller then the endura, and a bit bigger then the delica with a great grip.

Or a waved fully serated Sprderco in vg-10, but I know how some feel about serations.
