Yeah, AFAIK carriers always part of a battle group with numerous escort ships defending it from a host of threats, and given the USS Cole incident I can't see vessels of any size being allowed inside that screen

And any of our carriers could easily outpace any of those glorified fishing scows any time they wanted. They could cut circles around the silly little boats trying to encircle it...though I don't see that as an option they would choose with all the other responses at their disposal.

At some point, "weapons free" will have to be the response. Not sure how close we are to that, but its gotta be ticking closer and closer.

Our ships have a very restricted ROE. A scenario where Chinese fishing vessels surrounded the carrier and restricted it's ability to operate is a very real threat. If we took any action the Chinese would love to show us as bullying simple fishermen.

Targeting a carrier with land based missile weapons, even ones with hypersonic glide warheads, requires what that situation provides - precise information on position, course and speed and restricted maneuvering to simplify the target solution

    I would not allow it

I agree that it poses a real problem for us. Unfortunately, the only way to keep it from happening is to leave. But that would also be a victory for them.

It's a real problem for them as well. They do not have the persistent surveillance and targeting capabilities to make it reliably happen. They could always get lucky but that would end up being problematic for them as they could not handle our response.

While I agree I have to admit I'm not of certain of that as I once was.

I hate to say it, but I must agree

I look back on a long history (Liberty, Pueblo, Stark, Cole) of us ignoring provocations when it suits the suits. I would like to think an attack on a carrier would be different, but I am not confident how many people even inside the military are truly ready to go to war with the PRC

I hate to say it but warfighting skills are usually the last thing on the priority list. No one will admit to that but I have seen it day to day throughout my career in the Navy. There isn't enough time in the day to do all of the things that must be done. So, training to fight is the first thing to be pushed back. We'll get to it another day. That day rarely comes.

Yeah, I see the current situation with the PRC to be eerily reminiscent of our interaction with Imperial Japan during the 30s, only with far more deadly capabilities and weaponry. The only way out I see is containment by clearly overwhelming forces, but people are too busy making money off the ChiComs to see the moving finger

You know how history books make it seem like our now-besty ally Japan was once our sworn enemy? Looks like things might be moving in that direction with Vietnam, too.

Those who were once enemies, can be come allies.

We're looking to support Vietnam's territorial claims in the South China Sea.
