Yesterday China complained about Taiwan being able to arm themselves. Global Times said that the ChiComs have a red line that they will not let us cross...though they did not say what that red line was; typical inscrutability. Apparently, THIS $2.2B arms sale was not that far but they warned that a limit was there.

The main points were 1) The weapons were not militarily significant. 2) China can change the rules "The Chinese mainland increasingly dominates the cross-Straits situation while exercising restraint. But it has the capability to change the rules of the game across the Straits.” 3) There will be a price; they indicated that if they saw something as tipping the balance against them they would destroy it. 4) They assume that Taiwan would back down before a conflict “Taiwan's security depends on how it deals with cross-Strait relations and avoids military confrontation with the mainland. The Chinese mainland has been adhering to the policy of peaceful reunification. Taiwan authorities should not force the mainland to abandon such a policy.”

The commies think Taiwan being able to defend itself is a threat to their sovereignty. A free Taiwan insults the prestige of the Mandarin dictators.

    That's a tough calculus.

Truly, Taiwan could not hold out in the long run. A short-term defense, while trying to gather international support to their cause... maybe. But this isn't the 1960s, or even the 80s.

When China decides to take Taiwan, it'll happen.

That's an inscrutable calculus. If the commies try to take Taiwan and succeed what they have left will only be worth the crowing for.

If they try to take Formosa they may end up fighting everyone in the Pacific rim (and us) so the outcome may not be so forgone.

For want of a better place to put this, the PLA just rolled into Hong Kong.

    Linked tweet said:
<Breaking news> It seems that armored cars and soldiers of the People's Liberation Army have entered Hong Kong early this morning until the morning. In addition, the Chinese Ministry of Defense has suggested the possibility of the dispatch of People's Liberation Army on the Hong Kong issue at an article conference. They currently have three brigades of troops training for crowd control just down the beach at Zhangjiang. Deploying the troops will ignite the city but they will burn HK to the ground before letting them challenge ChiCom sovereignty.

We performed another FON mission in the Taiwan Straight. All this on the day when they released their new defense strategy emphatically stating that HK and Taiwan are part of the "One China" and they would brook no challenge to this policy. The communist Mandarin's are probably feeling pressured.

The chicom war on the $US is advancing faster.
Pomp has been down under trying to secure bases for missiles aimed north.
Indian and Pakistan sweating over Kashmir.
Issues in Taiwan and Russia being pushed.
Looks like it's true that you have to be crazy to want the job of running a country.

Bloomberg reporting that almost a million tons of crude oil was transferred in the SCS last month, with speculation that it was from Iran or Venezuela.

The Republic of China's (Taiwan) president Tsai Ing-wen in her National Day address to the nation publicly and officially rejected the One China policy being pushed by the ChiComs. She pointed out the failure of the policy in Hong Kong and a recent poll that showed almost 90% of the population rejected the concept on a bipartisan basis.

She said her goals are to ensure unity, defend sovereignty, bolster the economy and engage the world to overcome challenges.

This is something of a red line for the ChiComs.

Wow, yeah, I hadn't seen that.

Saying that explicitly is one way to poke the bear.

A Chinese think-tank dude has suggested that China needs to escalate its policy in the SCS to meet the growing gray-zone tactics of the US. There is a statistic that there are "at least" 3 US ships in the SCS every day.

Meanwhile, the Global Times insists that the "facts" show that China has only peaceful interests.

There's a report that the USS Ronald Reagan (an aircraft carrier) was "surrounded" by Chinese vessels in the SCS.

Ok... China has been known to use the fishing fleet as bullies when dealing with various problems, but... I just have a difficult time imagining a US carrier captain giving 2 ****s about that.

I suspect the "surrounding" was at a reasonable distance, and more like an escort. Following the carrier around, without really threatening anything.
