Years ago I knew three brothers named Forestal in Indy, Richard, Jerry, and Joe. I wonder if this guy is related.

I had one interaction with the soon to be former State Rep last session. Something seemed "off" about him. I chalked it up to narcissism and a lack of self-awareness. Maybe it was drugs, combined with narcissism and a lack of self-awareness.

    The name sounds familiar.
Was this the guy ranting that constitutional carry would allow criminals to get guns with no checks whatsoever?

I don't know who that is...

Rosemary Lehmberg, who at the time of the booking photo was the District Attorney of Travis County Texas. (Travis County contains the capitol city of Austin. She not only prosecuted "county crimes" but headed the Public Integrity Unit which prosecuted state level crimes by government office holders). She was arrested for drunken driving by Sheriff Deputies, and was recorded on video demanding that they "Call Greg!", meaning Greg Hamilton, the Sheriff. She was obnoxious at booking, threatened the jailers, and ended up in a restraint chair for awhile. YouTube has a lot of videos of her experience. She was convicted of DUI, sentence to 45 days in jail, served about half that. Someone was able to get her purchases from Twins Liquors, and turns out she REALLY liked her vodka -- 76 1.5 liter bottles in 15 months at nearly $60/bottle. There's a lot more to this story, just search on her name and Rick Perry's as well.

Dang, that was SIX years ago! Seems like just yesterday, harrumph harrumph.

Ah, okay. I don't remember it making the news up here, but maybe I wasn't paying attention.

Wow. A 12 year private? I know different departments will advance them differently, but 12 years seems a bit long to be still at entry level. Wonder why? Normally Id ask one of the many firefighters I work with but none are around.

To be fair, I finally talked to a buddy. This isnt unusual. Until upstream vacancies occur, you cant promote, even if you want to. Its not like the military where you get your rank over time predictably. In this case its more like you start as the flunkie, and until an assistant manager quits, you cant be promoted to assistant manager.

The podcast of yesterday's show has been posted. (WARNING: you may lose brain cells listening to Rep. Dan Forestal's nonsensical quibbling over the meaning of the words "get" and "acquire" - truly mind-numbing.)
Still, the takeaways from the show are:
    1. Forestal's earlier comment on Facebook that Constitutional Carry is a "no check whatsoever to get a gun bill" is a lie. Constitutional Carry will change absolutely nothing about when background checks are - or are not - required in the process of getting (or buying, or obtaining or, yes, ACQUIRING) a gun in Indiana. Forestal squirmed and deflected and changed the subject, but he never offered any cogent argument in support of the truth of his comment - because that comment was demonstrably untrue.
    2. Forestal's comment that Constitutional Carry will "allow criminals to carry guns in public" is also a lie. If a person is a prohibited possessor before Constitutional Carry, they'll be a prohibited possessor after Constitutional Carry - and they'll be subject to arrest and prosecution under either state or federal law (or both) if they are found in possession of a gun.
    3. Democrats like Dan Forestal demonstrate clearly that they have absolutely no valid arguments against Constitutional Carry when they have to totally mischaracterize what the bill does and doesn't do in order to rally opposition to it.
    4. When given ample opportunity to present real arguments in opposition to Constitutional Carry on the highest-rated talk radio station in Indiana, Forestal wasted his air time (and our brain cells) quibbling over second-grade English and calling a dictionary definition of a three-letter word "legalese" - and that should tell you a lot.
    5. As ably demonstrated by Jim Lucas, sometimes the best way to win a debate is to simply allow the other side to demonstrate the weakness of his argument, then blow it out of the water with plain, direct and honest language.
    6. Constitutional Carry now has more momentum than ever before - as the arguments against it (including those offered by Dan Forestal) either fall flat or are exposed as outright lies.
My prediction: Indiana becomes the 13th state to adopt Constitutional Carry during the next session of the Indiana General Assembly.

I do remember that Act. He thought it was a good idea to go on a radio show with an attorney known as The Gun Guy and Jim Lucas was in studio too. At least he won't be on the House Public Policy Committee next session. This guy said he was a Fire Fighter more times than an F-15 pilot says he's a Fighter Pilot.

More up or out than predictable when you get older. Early on it is predictable.

    Maybe.
It's basically a large corporation. So there are openings because people are getting out, or getting promoted.

But if you're a 3rd Class Electronics tech, trying for 2nd, the Navy posts that they need 200 2nd classes, if you're score is #201, then you're not getting promoted.
The number available is all there is.

Dan Forestal: the gift that keeps on giving.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Indianapolis Fire Department has suspended state Rep. Dan Forestal without pay following his arrest last weekend.

Forestal, an active firefighter with IFD, will be suspended for 240 hours and remanded into an employee assistance program. (Firefighter hours are different than normal hours. This could be a day and a half or 6 months.)

After the 240 hours, the fire department says he will be placed on “administrative assignment (40 hour work week).” He will not be responding on runs or acting in the capacity of a suppression firefighter/EMT. (Administrative assignment? You mean some underappreciated behind the scenes guy who isn't cool enough to hang out with the Firemen will get stuck babysitting this clown? Sadly yes.)

Pending the outcome of the case, IFDÂ’s chief will determine the next course of action.

Documents show Forestal also threatened to sue the officers for “violating his civil rights,” and identified himself as an Indianapolis firefighter, a state representative and the nephew of the Marion County sheriff. (Did he drop the names and titles before or after threatening to sue? It seems relevant.) After officers wrestled him to the ground, they say Forestal refused a breath test. (Mad props to the Officers who did not curb-stomp this idiot who clearly is in need of a curb-stomping. And which civil rights, Dan? Are they contained in the same document as the ones you want to deny others? HHHMMMM???)

Police got a warrant for a blood test at the hospital, where according to the report, Forestal tried to rip the warrant out of their hands and had to be restrained by sheriffÂ’s deputies to have the blood test completed.

According to documents provided by IFD, this wasnÂ’t the first time Forestal was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated. In fact, in an email sent in November of 2007, he wrote that he had pleaded guilty to an OWI charge. He also apologized for the situation and said it wouldnÂ’t happen again.

A special prosecutor out of Hancock County has been appointed in the recent case, because Forestal had previously made contributions to Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry and worked as a campaign volunteer.

Yes, this was my meaning. You dont automatically go up in rank just for hard work, existing, etc. You stay put until a slot opens up. Then you can test for it. But if no slots open, you are stuck there.

EDIT: In my mind, its like the guy in the army for 12 years that exits as a buck private; Something happened or he was a loser to not even advance to PFC or Specialist. Not the same in this case. (except he does appear to be a loser on a personal level, all things considered)

It's not as bad as in the National Guard (old guys and they never leave.) E1-E4 was time in service/time in grade. Sewed on Airman at 6 months, 10 months later Airman First Class, 14 months later Senior Airman, a year later Sergeant. After that it's testing for promotion with time in grade minimums. I made SSgt first try. Made it by 1 point in a promotion system with a max score of 450, but that counts. TSgt was a bear and it was the early/mid-90s. Four tries, missed it on the third try by 4 points. The anger turned to motivation and made it by 7 the next year.

MSgt: first try, by 7 points. I was in a very large career field then, that skewed the cut-off scores lower. Then I retrained into another (very small) career field and was competing for the hardest stripe to make (board score from a records review is over half of the score.) SMSgt took six tries.

Thanks Kelly. I didnt expect him to be a Captain or anything, just not the absolute bottom. I assumed there was at least one step up after a little time in service. Kinda like you dont make minimum wage after a year unless you are lazy or your boss is a cheap bastard; you're gonna advance a little bit after a short while if you work hard and show up on time.

    I assumed wrong.

Not always, the service has been known to double slot/billet in some career fields and units to maintain readiness strength. I was in an MP unit that was easily double strength in all ranks.
