Professor, Media Contributor Thinks Ariana Grande Better Suited Than Jim Mattis To Fight Terror

The Nation contributor and University of Michigan history professor Juan Cole published an article Wednesday centered on Grande and how the Department of Defense could learn a thing or two from the 23-year-old Nickelodeon alum.
The headline reads: “Arianna Grande Understands Counterterrorism Better Than Jim Mattis.”

It's from The Nation, so no one should be surprised in the slightest.

I'd hope those words get that mayor out at the next election. Terrible incident today. I wonder if it will affect the Grande benefit concert tomorrow. I do give her credit for booking and doing it so soon. I really wonder though of the London attack will affect it or the performers wanting to play. (Fergie had incredible timing leaving Blackeyed Peas)

Manchester Arena attack 'could have been stopped' - BBC News

    • Abedi had been a "Subject of Interest" for MI5 - meaning someone they were investigating - between January and July 2014, and then again in October 2015
    • On two occasions in the months before Abedi attacked, MI5 received intelligence, but its significance was not fully appreciated at the time and, in hindsight, was "highly relevant" to the planned attack
    • Abedi was identified by MI5 as one of "a few dozen" people who needed further consideration. The meeting to do that was due to take place on 31 May, nine days after the attack
    • There was no security service port alert against Abedi, so he was not questioned at the border when he returned to the UK from Libya four days before the attack

All, or most, attacks could be stopped. Just depends on how much latitude you want to give intelligence/law enforcement services.:dunno:

Meaning how much civil liberties you're willing to give up.

You can't arrest or search people just because they MIGHT commit attacks or because the visited certain places.

Many of those attacks cannot be stopped especially when they are not planned in advance (or just planned a day or two in advance by renting a truck), like the low tech knife or truck attacks.

It's why those attacks are more and more popular.

You don't need to plan things months in advance, you don't need to have multiple contatcs in the Middle East to get explosives or weapons.

You can rent a truck at Home Depot and buy a knife at Walmart at the very last minute.

Manchester Arena Inquiry: Security 'did not approach bomber over racism fears'

Two different security minimum-wagers thought he might be threat, and a concert attendee pointed out the bomber to one of those security guys as hinky, but they never passed the word up the chain. The "Asian" (as the British say)-named security guy who was alerted by a concert attendee didn't have a radio. When he told the white security guy who did have a radio, white guy independently thought something was off about the bomber, but was more concerned that he would be thought racist if he reported the "asian" suspect. He claims he tried to radio the security control room but there was too much radio traffic, so he just went outside the area to his post and did nothing further to alert anyone.

Manchester Arena bomber 'smiled' as he walked to his death
The Asian-named security guard saw the bomber several times, but apparently didn't really think anything of it until a concert goer pointed him out. He had no radio and said he wasn't supposed to leave his post a a fire exit. He flagged down the other security guy when he walked by. Saw the bomber leave an area out of sight of CCTV and walk towards the stage smiling.

Manchester Arena Inquiry: Security 'fobbed off' bomber concerns
The concert goer who told the Asian-named security guard about his suspicions felt the guard didn't take him seriously. The concert-goeer actually spoke to the bomber and said he thought it strange to have a big backpack at a kids' concert. The bomber just jollied him along and went on.

Manchester Arena Inquiry: Police officer was on 'unacceptable' two-hour break
British Transport Police officer took a two hour, nine minute break (max was supposed to be one hour) and missed the bomber walking from the tram to the concert. No other BTP officers were in the area because one set of officers went on break before the other set had returned from their break. A father picking up his kid in the area saw the bomber and thought he looked like a suicide bomber because of the black clothes and the backpack, but he also saw two "members of the security team" pointing at the bomber and talking.

Manchester Arena Inquiry: Bomber 'missed by seconds' by patrol
Confirms the four police (one constable, three community whatchacallits) all took a break at the same time and missed the bomber. Also says members of the public told both police and show security about the guy.

    In other news:
Police will enter homes and break up Christmas dinners if families break lockdown rules - and there will be riots, predicts police commissioner
This is the West Midlands police, not the British Transport Police, but I'll bet their priorities, attitudes, and training are not that different...

I'm not warm or fuzzy reading this Alamo. Can't believe it was over 3 years ago either.
