In a real SHTF situation, the window where cash is useful might close quickly. Once people lose faith in it and realize it makes bad kindling and worse toilet paper, it will be useless. But until that window closes, use it up.

I think cash has more of a shtf jr. Importance. Everyday emergencies.

What do you carry for trade after folding money has no value?

When it gets to no value, do you still keep it assuming ROL returns soon enough for the value to return?

Not every SHTF involves zombies. Sometimes things go sideways. After major storms, hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, etc.... Cash is still accepted, even though the credit card and Apple Pay infrastructure is down. And, I doubt anyone has switched to silver/gold or barter.

When these discussions pop up, folks love to jump right to SHTF or WROL scenarios and claim cash will be worthless. But when was the last time in America that cash had no value? Seriously, has it happened in the past 50 years? 100?

Let's use New Orleans and Katrina as an example of a mini SHTF event. I guarantee in the days and weeks after the storm, there were people accepting cash for payment of food, water and basic supplies.

But even in an extended SHTF scenario, having pallets of water or granola bars to barter with is going to be a much more tradable currency than gold or silver ever would be.

Yes, the gold and silver thing is always suggested.

How much knowledge of gold and silver is the average sole that just wants food or ammo gonna have? Let alone the value, at that time.

How would you divide up a gold coin to make a small purchase?

How much silver for a half dozen eggs? A couple of bottles of water and a package of ramen noodles? 50 rounds of 9mm?

It's all relative, you're assuming gold and silver will be worth something in a true shtf scenario. At the end of the day it only holds the value we assign it. Could end up not being worth its weight if you're on the move.
