Today's Johnson County paper has a front page article about ending Greenwood's 1968 Law that does not allow concealed carry of weapons.

    Who knew it existed?

    Sec. 6-330 Concealed Weapons Prohibited.
    25
A person who is not a peace officer or who is not licensed pursuant to I.C., 35-47-2-1 et seq., shall not carry
about his person any concealed pistol, knife, razor, slingshot, metal knuckles or any other weapon or thing
    of deadly character. (Code 1968, § 42.08; 1983 Greenwood Municipal Code, § 8-2)

Maybe the town council is bringing their code in line with state law now?

"or any other weapon or thing of deadly character. "

Does that include pens, pencils, screwdrivers or any other such thing that can be used as an improvised stabbing weapon? I'm sure that a sharpened pencil makes an excellent killing device when inserted forcefully into someone ear or neck.

Pretty sure it is a city ordinance and not a felony. This topic is much ado about nothing, just an archaic left over that everyone forgot about. No one has ever been charged with that, heck I did not even know it was still on the books. Kind of like the left over sodomy laws, still on the books, but not enforced.

Really? Is this really the city's position?

Gee, I don't know, what could Greenwood possibly be worried about in 1968? Geez.

Well, remember the general political climate in 1968. Greenwood wasn't immune from it, like many other places. Gun control here, just like many places, was just another term for Jim Crow.

The Town of Greenwood was very much white bread in 1968, and remained so until becoming the City of Greenwood. Even The Grand Wizard of the KKK lived off Smith Valley Road within The Oaks subdivision until about 1980.

If someone of color was seen South of County Line Rd., the residents and police kept an eye on them..........making sure they conducted their business and left here promptly.

What was the documentary? Twisted Cross of Hatred or something?

    Maybe Cross of Fire?

Remember, it was Tom Cochran who co-stared with his mustache? Had to watch it in youth group. What was its name???

The gun control laws put into place at the end of the 1960's in the U.S. were predominantly predicated on the race riots following the assassination of MLK. The other high-visibility assassinations of the time just added fuel to that fire.

Correct in part. There was a strain of wanting to control the behaviour of Southern whites. In Indianapolis gun control ordinances were passed to control Southern whites who moved north, e.g. Speedway's ordinance.

Thomas Sowell discusses the problems Indianapolis had with Southern white immigrants in the first chapter of Black Rednecks and White Liberals.

I vividly remember a child spewing racist hatred, and a man comparing black race features to monkeys in that series.

    Where's the bacon?
Two threads merged. Y'know.. technically, this could have been left in place so long as firearms were exempted for those carrying within the law. (that is, those who carry without being licensed face bigger problems than an ordinance violation.)

I think they handled it correctly and this is a good start.

    Blessings,
    Bill
