A person who is not a peace officer or who is not licensed pursuant to I.C., 35-47-2-1 et seq., shall not carry
about his person any concealed pistol, knife, razor, slingshot, metal knuckles or any other weapon or thing
of deadly character. (Code 1968, § 42.08; 1983 Greenwood Municipal Code, § 8-2)
City officials aren’t sure why the rule was ever adopted in the first place.

Well, remember the general political climate in 1968. Greenwood wasn't immune from it, like many other places. Gun control here, just like many places, was just another term for Jim Crow.
The Town of Greenwood was very much white bread in 1968, and remained so until becoming the City of Greenwood. Even The Grand Wizard of the KKK lived off Smith Valley Road within The Oaks subdivision until about 1980.
If someone of color was seen South of County Line Rd., the residents and police kept an eye on them..........making sure they conducted their business and left here promptly.
The gun control laws put into place at the end of the 1960's in the U.S. were predominantly predicated on the race riots following the assassination of MLK.
