Aerial combat has changed so much so quickly. To think 20 years earlier they were flying canvas planes and twenty years after they were flying supersonic jets.

    20 years earlier?

What do you think the Hawker Hurricane was made out of?

IT was the plane that won the Battle of Britain.

This is an awesome story and a great testament to John Brownings design. But this last part made me feel a little queasy... :puke:

"The machine guns will now be made safe and join the rest of the aircraft on permanent display in Derry, where Wolfe was based, a city on the edge of Europe that played a pivotal role in the war."

I am pretty sure that does not mean they are going to simply engage the safety...:crying:

Rumor has it that a half dozen or so completed P-47 Thunderbolts were buried somewhere near the Evansville plant when the contract was cancelled at the end of WWII.

    Man the shovels! :patriot:

As to the OP, thanks for posting! Very cool indeed!
Wonder what Mikhail Kalashnikov and John Browning could've come up with if they had collaborated...

They made stuff to last back in those days! World War II was an innovative time, lots of good tech came out of it. Neat story! It's sad how the English aren't allowed to own guns, back in the 40's they had some good ones!

I forget who it's attributed to, but I've always remembered: "If necessity is the mother of invention, war is its father."

An earlier post talked about the Glacier Girl P-38 that was dug out of the Ice in Greenland. My father was a P-38 pilot and we got involved a little in the rebuild.
The P-38 had 4 Browning 50's and a 20mm cannon. One of the 50's was taken out of the ice, cleaned and lubed. It fired perfectly. Mr. Browning was the best.

That is really cool that everything remained preserved like that. Seems like guns made today can develop rust if you "talk" about moisture!
