There was also a flap about this last year when some politician referred to the "black hole of Calcutta" when talking about where money was going.

Now, I consider myself pretty sensitive to racial issues, but these two have me completely befuddled.

One used to be able to use this word: "Niggardly" (noun: "niggard") is an adjective meaning "stingy" or "miserly", perhaps related to the Old Norse verb nigla = "to fuss about small matters". It is cognate with "niggling", meaning "petty" or "unimportant", as in "the niggling details".

No such thing. Racism is racism, no matter who the target is.

That said, it is not racism to simply use the word "black", nor is it sexism to refer to a "hole", nor is it any other "-ism" to simply have a conversation using words that people take other than as they are meant.

I think it's high time we stopped worrying about racism and start worrying about saving a country. Not from the Democrats. Not from the Republicans. Not from the rich, nor the poor. We need to save this country from those who think they are entitled to benefit from the labor of others without doing something to earn that benefit.

It's the media who should be ashamed for even airing this story. If they would start calling this stuff for what it is and refuse to give it air time, it would go away. But, it sells, so I doubt that will happen.
