The only real question here is how long it takes them to come to this decision?

I am SO looking forward to taking my .30-30 out for deer season this year!
Even though mine is a modern rifle, and basically brand new, I still want to try the cartridge.
I have a .308 and a .30-06 that will probably see some deer-time eventually, but I'm just giddy about being able to use the .30-30. :rockwoot:

    Testify, brother.
There may be more capable calibers out there, but .30-30 is nearly synonymous with the term "deer rifle," and for a bunch of reasons...going all the way back to 1895.

I am really happy that this finally got signed. Now hopefully this does not get a bunch of bad press so that the neighbors of the land owners for which I have permission to hunt, don't go running around saying how dangerous this is so that I am not allowed to use center fire on their land.

The DNR will not "clarify". This is written law and they cant change a word of it. They have to enforce it as written.

At this point (according to a senator friend) it might not even be "clarified" by the Legislature.. They have not even called a
"technical day" and might not. IF it happens it will probably be in June.

There is an awful lot of gray area, as the bill is written. I believe there will be some clarification in the regs because "300" is not a cartridge definition.

Have you not learned from Donald Trump that there is no such thing as "bad" press!!!! LOL I hope there is a TON of press! I am really sad they limited it to private lands since the economic boost to Indiana will come from neighboring state hunters flocking here to spend there schillings, euros, and dollars! But this is just a test run, so get ready for more fun.

Very nice, .300 allows .300 weatherby Mag.; 300 Win. Mag.; .300 RUM; .300 WSM, .300 H&H Mag.; etc. All great cartridges. Also, .243 covers .243 Win.; 6mm Rem. and various wildcats too. Most exciting part of HR1231 is the provision to add 10mm(.40) as deer cartridge for handgun hunting deer since it's not limited to private property or 10 round carry and it will make a great gun for tree stand hunting and thick with some great 10mm hunting loads. I can't wait to see what dates are available!

While am all for the introduction of rifles for hunting here in my beloved state, the specific chambering is a bit funky. Hopefully it is NOT clarified so individuals could use chamberings with those bore diameters.

They cannot change the written law, but implementation of it is the DNR's call. If they want to specifically name the .300 round they can do that.

Sorry, DNR will have to live with various .300 cartridges. They are limited by the language of the statute to the provisions specifically in the statute which they may address. This will be great for Indiana deer hunters. Implementation is limited to setting the four seasons established by HR1231.

I'm thinking your logic may be flawed. Certainly DNR will have to live with the listed calibers. But believe its within their purview to Change their rules and add more. Not add more to the specific law, just add more to the list of authorized calibers.

Like Willie said, there is a process/time to make technical changes.
Who can do what and when, I dunno.

They did not list calibers, they listed cartridges.
Only two calibers were listed in the 5 cartridges.

With Joe Deer Hunter not understanding the diff, my guess is that there will be some clarification before hunting season.

If not the CO's are gonna need 10X ticket booklets.

    Response from the DNR:

House Bill 1231 was passed by the Indiana General Assembly this year and signed by the Governor. It was initiated by a state legislator and not the DNR. It allows the following high-powered rifles on private land only statewide, with a limit of no more than 10 cartridges (possessed in the field): .243, .30-30, .300, .30-06, and .308. All the cartridges presently legal are still legal on public and private land. All of these need to have a minimum case length of 1.16" and no full metal jacketed bullets can be used. These additional new cartridges are for private land only and all of the " in between" cartridges (270,etc) are not legal anywhere. We will have information in this year's DNR Hunting/Trapping Regulation guide, which will be available in late July. The bill language can be found on-line at: https://iga.in.gov/legislative/2016/bills/house/1231

I am assuming they put very little thought into this press release, or maybe they assume that there isn't more than one cartridge related to each caliber listed. I think it would be an excellent idea to have the same government in charge of my healthcare.

Its only March. Firearms season isn't until mid-November. There is plenty time to clarify things, which obviously still need to be done. Lot of ambiguity in what's legal, sucks for whoever has to enforce these things.

My comments came directly from reading the Statute and not any press release. Any interpretation by the DNR will not have the force of law and is not required because the statute is clearly written.

I was responding to what V-K posted, that appeared to be an official response from the IDNR.

I'm assuming that the requirement for ten rounds or less means how many rounds being carried on your person, not for any in a box in your car/truck/ATV, right?

Who knows at this point? If you're in/on your truck, car, or ATV, then I could see them saying it's in your possession. The reason I say this is I know they ding you during duck season if you have non-steel shot.
