Yes, but if the HOA has skin in the game, then they will be less likely to attempt to enforce petty things like grass that's slightly too high or Christmas lights that weren't taken down immediately after the holiday. Only the truly obnoxious/problematic things will be addressed.

Evidently, you've never had the great opportunity to be blessed with the power hungry over bearing H.O.A. run by decedents of empirical idiots and not a management group.

I have had numerous talks with my neighbors about the former 5 memeber H.O.A that ruled over our sub division like direct descendants of Stalin, Hitler or anyone else who comes to mind. It's comical on how many have said that they'd burn their house down to the ground and move before they ever let one be re-installed.

Are there some things I'd like to see different, yes, but it has not effected me personally, (except for a neighbor to the west of me who no longer has free range chickens in my yard).
Individualism is what makes a neighborhood, a home with a different mailbox, flagpole in the front yard, brown stained cedar siding versus one with Steel Bluish/Gray, one with shutters, the other not.
A basketball goal. Halloween/Christmas decorations to the point we have people drive through to check them out.

I will not live some place where all residents must follow the rules like Lemmings walking off the ledge of a cliff.

How was it disbanded? Usually they are tied to the deed, the covenants can be changed but the existence of the HOA is a more complex matter.

Choices are good, unless I'm on acreage way out, I want to know that my neighbors are not starting a junk collection in the front yard, or back for that matter...
