One thing that a lot of people omit in a self defense shotgun are the excellent Speed-Feed stocks. Remington has several of them avaliable on their factory weapons. They work faster, and are far more practical than these "Side Saddle" contraptions you see on so many of these guns. However I'll freely admit they don't possess the "cool factor" of having 5 or 6 shells attached to the side of your receiver. Bill T.

As I stated earlier I prefer the Speedfeed to the sidesaddles. I prefer semi autos to pumps and the side saddles have been known to cause functioning problems on the semi's.

As for the headset for the cell phone I feel it it both unnecessary and difficult to use while wearing a electronic headset. The speaker phone will do a good enough job and I can hear better with my ears on than without them. The flashlight will be sitting on the bed ready to light up the doorway while i position myself on the side of the bed away from the door covering it with the shotgun. I would already have turned on a bright light in every room of the house except the bedroom and would be listening intently to the baby monitors I have in several rooms. I have checked btw...with lights on at both ends of the hallway anyone approaching the bedroom door casts a pretty hefty shadow...impossible to miss.

If I see shadows or hear someone moving in the house via the monitors I would call the PD, tell them where I am and toss a light stick out the window with a house key attached.

If I don't hear anything after 5 minutes i would stow the shotgun and clear the house using proper flashlight techniques keeping the light away from my body.

If the electric is out but the street light outside my house is on and the neighbors are lit I will assume power to my house has been cut and will take a defensive position and call the PD.

A shotgun or any long gun is strictly a defensive weapon in the house, best used from a barricaded position or at the top of a set of enclosed stairs. It is the last firearm to use if you need to clear the house by yourself.

451 makes a lot of sense here.

never thought about the light stick thing. learn something new every day.

My "HD" shotgun is just the shotgun I use for everything else + a flashlight. No need for anything fancy.

I am finishing up the Magpul shotgun DVD and have run a bunch of exercises they ask you to do. I removed and sold my speedfeed stock. I could not get it to run right and it interfered with my flow of shooting. I honestly think the one I had was defective! :D I prefer a sidesaddle. I could not get the shells from the stock to the gun as quick as I liked. The Sidesaddle gets it into chamber a bit quicker in my training (your mileage may vary).

One thing about the speedfeed stocks though (or pistol gripped full stocks) is the recoil mitigation. That extra pistol grip sticking down sure does help, NOTICEABLE difference. I use the Remington factory ShureShot rear stock on my 20" Remington and it makes a difference, gives me a great ironsight (and my Pride Fowler lines up nice too) cheekweld, and is inexpensive. What works for me might not work for someone else. i wanted a better cheekweld for my irons AND optic as I would turn to my shotgun in an emergency and wanted it as flexible as possible (long and short ranged shots).

The speedfeeds work for some, it's a matter of how you train and what you want. I keep a Uncky Mike's police nylon belt with a bunch of keepers holding in some shell holders (competition style). LOTS of slugs in those, I keep nothing but shot in and on the gun. Need a longer ranged shot, don't rack, slug it, rack, go. The belt is easy to put on, even during the dark and in PJs, the keepers help keep the shell holders in place.

    451,

That is one of the most beautiful, as well as practical, self defense shotguns I've seen in a long while! Congrats, and reps given. Bill T.

That shotgun holds 10+1...lol...if I need a speed reload I am screwed, the Speedfeed holds slugs just in case. Plus on the far side of the bed is another shotgun. It is there for the ex when she stay over as well as being available for a shotgun New York reload! It is the HK Benelli I spoke of earlier.

Sadly the neighborhood I live in has been transitioning from being a nice neighborhood of retired folks to a bunch of duplex rentals with Mex gang graffiti popping up all over. I hate the thought of moving...this house will be paid for in less than two more years and just think of the toy money that will free up! I haven't had a problem here yet, I do OC when outside of my house and I don't discourage the perceptions and rumors that have gotten back to me that I am some type of Fed...using my military id rather than driver's license helps with that when needed in the local stop and robs. I have been asked several times by neighbors if I am a " Americano Federale", I just smile...

Here is what we hope never to use:

All sport Hornady TAP low recoil 12ga "00" @ 1100fps

Pictured next to Mil-Spec sized AR for size comparison.

    - FHN Police 12ga with AR grip and sights. 20" barrel with 7+1 and five on the side. Ported barrel and ported choke. Fastest pump gun I have ever seen or used. Pure joy to shoot. Great sight acquisition - but may be a bit much for indoor security. If I was to purchase again - I would opt for the collapsible stock, but easiy enough to change. $600 - $675

    - Mossburg 500A 12ga Trench gun with 20" barrel 7+1 and four more in the Speed Feed stock (2 per side). Workhorse - bought new 25ish years ago (I believe these we the first with synthetic stocks?). Used and abused her through the years and still would bet my life with any day of the week. Probably one of the most used HD shotties (500 series). $300 - $325

    - Escort Aimsguard 12ga 18" barrel 5+1. No frills and still shoots very comfortable. With an oversized front stock and slimmer cut in the grip - my wife really likes to shoot this one. This one is specifically hers by request. $275 - $300

I have a few semi-auto shotties, but for some reason I stick with the pumps for HD:dunno:

I had a Maverick 88 that would always feed and fire the first round, then it would eject the shell, but not feed the second round. I bought the gun used, but it was in like new condition. I am not impressed with Maverick shotguns.

It really depends on your budget. If you are running low on funds the maverick would work just fine. If you have a little more to spend the Mossberg 500 is a solid 12ga shotgun. If you a little better get the 870.

The real fun comes when you are looking at the semi auto shotguns. There my personal favorite is the Saiga. Reliable and bullet proof. Plus the recoil is manageable.
