Still sets them apart, making them their own "class" of weapon. Why not just call them "rifles" and stop trying to differentiate them from other rifles?
    This!
If we ARE going to give them their own, "Non aggressor" title, why not the one that is at least already out there!? Modern sporting arms? Personally, I don't look at my AR any differently than I look at my 10/22, or my M1 Garand, for that matter! They are all just semi automatic rifles! (Although, My M1 is prettier, and gives me more pride of ownership than the others!)
Even the term, "Semi Automatic", is too close to "Automatic", for the ignorant, uneducated gun grabbers! If we are going to coin new phrases in regards to our firearms, to make them less scary, let's replace "semi automatic", with "Fuzzy bunnies load the chamber for me"!:laugh::laugh:

I say any small arms our government has access to are "homeland defense."

And by that, a right of the people to own. Features, operation, etc doesn't make a difference, only a criminal agency would regulate against a firearm's ability to drop the hammer when the bolt is closed. Since, that "auto sear" is actually more like a "safety sear" and is known by the term in most other countries, as it prevents out of battery fire.

And suppressors? Short barrel shotguns/rifles? Excuse me? Aren't all of these things for convenience?
