Either way, in a long term SHTF senario I understand that clean laundry may be a luxury, but wouldn't it be nice to at least have somewhat clean clothes?

We made almost a years worth (a single batch lasted our family 10 months) for approx $12. Now, it didn't keep our whites as white as commercial detergent, but it did work pretty well.

I saw this in a rural king ad a while back and tried it, I meant to post it here for the same reason.

What we did for whites/heavily soiled was add just a bit of commercial laundry soap with the home made stuff, it helped a good bit. And by a bit maybe 1/5th of what it calls for at the most. We have hard water and the commercial stuff has softeners in it.
