The rest of the days flights are canceled. The beatings continue as bus loads of folks move off to the reeducation camps. It's not going to get any better for them.

    Racial superiority, supremacy...
People all around the world have had stories on how and why their bloodlines are oh just so special, falling for it.
Facts of the matter is that people need somebody to look down on. The emotional knee jerks of identifying, segregating based upon observed differences; those are hard wired into people.

Things are getting serious. Our daughter in Shenzhen is completely unaware of what's happening in HK and the buildup. Sent her the above links - news to her. We called on Whatsapp to see how she's doing and fill her in. It appears that the Chicomms might be listening in in spite of the encryption. She was cut off several times when the words "armored vehicles," "beating protesters" and "Tienanmen" were used.

We are encouraging her to prepare for a fast exit - at least the Shenzhen airport is still open.

The military truck convoys reported on the 12th belonged to the People's Armed Police. They are a paramilitary police force of abut 1.5 million tasked with internal security, riot control, anti-terrorism and ChiCom law enforcement. They fall directly under the Central Military Commission headed by Prez Xi. So, while not exactly the PLA they might as well be.

From the Global Times, they are declaring this a "color revolution" same as those that happened in the Ukraine and Georgia being abetted by the US. They wrote, "The Chinese government will never allow extreme opposition and the West to pull Hong Kong into the anti-China camp, nor will it allow the city to slip into long-term chaos or become a base for the West to subvert China's political system. This is a grim fight between attempts to deprive and defend the city's international financial center status."

The ChiComs have denied port calls to Hong Kong by the USS Green Bay and the USS Lake Erie. Not a real surprise, I don't think they want pictures of US sailors in the crowds of protesters where they could easily end up if they just went on a bar crawl.

Civilian encryption is a pacifier when it comes to government capabilities.

Also, for anyone in ChiComland when it becomes obvious that you need to get out it is probably already too late.

Sounds like a playbook was translated from Russian to Mandarin.

    Edit: or democrat to Mandarin.

The Hong Kong police seem to be actually quite subdued. I saw the video of a HK cop who got his baton taken from him, and was getting beaten with it, so he drew his sidearm. TRULY remarkable restraint not to pull the trigger (assuming it was loaded).

If China moves in, without express HK invitation, it may be interesting to see where the HK police stand.

The airport seems to be defused, for the moment.

Also, the protestors aren't exactly clean in this, either. Those "laser pointers" aren't all off-the-shelf things. Some of the vids look like DIY stuff (maybe from old CD/DVR drives) that actually can be used to cause harm.

Honestly, at times they are more like rioters.

But, it also seems like the police know which groups to go after who are peaceful, and which ones might fight back - avoiding the latter.

We were there in July. I can tell you it’s a different world. Those officers carry .38 smiths with 6 shots and two speed loaders. They don’t want to get into a shootout that’s for sure.

Apparently the protesters beat up a Global Times reporter.

    That's problematic.

    Modern warfare is complicated.

Since the liberal revolutions of the 18th century, authorities basically need to sell the population on fighting. Some wonderful rhetoric has been the result ("We shall never surrender," by Churchill), but that is the reality. So, modern marketing includes social media.
