The Navy wanted its own BRRRRRRRRRRRRT.

A nice morale builder (besides the presence of the Phalanx, itself) is the occasions when the crew gets to decorate it.
When my son was on the USS Roosevelt CVN-71 (the Big Stick) they did it up like a Minion, when he was on the USS Reagan CVN-76, they did it up like R2D2, the Star Wars theme being particularly fitting, considering the ships namesake.

If I remember correctly, when his squadron was assigned to USS G.H.W.Bush CVN-77, the crew made it up like Darth Vader, but he said it looked more like Dark Helmet from Spaceballs (proportions were off).

Considering what it's targets are, how much armor does the navy expect on missiles, planes, and drones to need tungsten penetrators? :dunno:
It's not armor it needs to defeat. It's potentially a high speed hypersonic incoming missile of significant size that must be totally destroyed. It creates a cloud of projectiles that creates a near 100% hit and destruction probability as it only requires one hit from one round to destroy the target -- as compared to a weapon such as a quad .50 BMG. The cost of the system and its ammo isn't about the relative cost of the target engaged. It's about the consequence and cost of damage or destruction of what it's protecting. The system is designed to engage an enormous range of different potential targets.

Nice! I assume that's an NFA gun? Would be cool to have in the gun safe, but probably not a very cost-effective purchase.
