So I am going to say this right out of the gate, in case what I am asking sounds stupid. But I have Never gone hunting a day in my life. With Dog food being kind of pricey right now I am thinking of taking a deer or two. Not bragging just saying my Rifle Marksman skills are well above average.

With that being said head shots are not going to be an issue. We are talking relatively short distance here, maybe 30 to 40 yards. And it would be on our property and the section I would be hunting in would be in what I like to call the salad bowl its at the base of a massive hill.

With that being said what would you recommend for Caliber and Rifle?

    Thanks

    Ok. A lot to unpack

Caliber depends on your gun. These are common choices…

    Semi-Auto = .308, 350 legend, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 creedmoore, .450 bushmaster, 762x39, 10mm

    Lever Action = .357 magnum, .30-30, .45-70

    Bolt action = .300 blk, .308, 6.5 creedmore, & tons more

    Pistols = 10mm, .357 magnum

I’m sure I left out a lot of calibers and didn’t even say shotgun slugs

Headshots? I guess you can. But I have always taken body shot. Heart & lung shots

I like your idea though. Never thought before this year about taking does for dog food. I have always been 6 point + buck hunter.

    Happy hunting!

So just wondering Heart and Lung will that take them down and out as fast as a head shot. Not trying to be gruesome or anything, I just to make sure it’s as quick and humane as possible.

We usually save the cows organs for the dogs as well as the bones. All the less than desirable cuts get ground into burger.

Thats why I was thinking of harvesting the deer it can not be too complicated to process and just grind it for the dogs.

I'be got a buddy that harvests a few for hos dogs every year.

As Michigan Slim said above, keep the back straps for yourself.....best part of the deer IMO.

    Good luck!

I took a very large doe two years ago with a head shot at about 35 yards.
I hit her about 1" behind and 1" below her ear with a 200gr Hornady FTX in ..35 Remington.
She did not take a step.
    Didn't even twitch.
Just dropped straight to the ground.

We also are a headshot family, with half a cap removed nary a half step.
