Is it possible, providing you have all the paperwork, to buy a newly made full auto firearm as a civilian or do they all have to be made prior to 1987 or whatever that special date is. Buddy of mine says pre '87 only I argued otherwise. I have a feeling I'm in for a rude awakening, and I'll be out a cigar too.

[heavy sarcasm] Just go to any gun show. You can buy them there without a background check. [/heavy sarcasm]

All that aside, like others have posted, it is much more difficult to purchase something made after the magical date in '86.

I'll get the cigar ready just in case but Boostjunki said "which aren't as simple to purchase/posses as something pre-ban". Is there a whisper of hope for my argument there or should I get my cutter and lighter ready while I'm at it.

Only Title 2 dealers/manufacturers can acquire newly made machine guns. There is no hope of average Joes acquiring machine guns made after 1986.

Yes. If you want to pay heavily and beg a LEO agency for a demo letter. It requires an FFL with the SOT tax, and LEO "demo" paperwork. It's not possible to own as a "civilian" if it's a post/dealer sample.

While it is true, you can't just go "buy" or "make" a machinegun, it is definitely possible if you have a specialized FFL, and paperwork from LEO.
