I have 50 acres of dense woods, surrounded by another 150 acres of dense woods and bordered by the old Wabash-Erie canal.
It's a snake heaven.
Hoosier National Forest in Martinsville has been the farthest north reporting that I'm aware of. Supposedly in Brown County State Park, too. I guess that's a touch farther south.Mainly down south. Mainly pygmy rattlers.
It's a corn snake. You can tell by their eyes. Corn snake has a round pupil, copperhead had a slit looking pupil.Incredibly aggressive
Northern Indiana only has massasauga rattlesnakes. All rattlesnakes in Indiana (massasauga, timber) are on the endangered species list. Killing them is illegal, just so you know. There have been reports over the years about some kind of rattlesnake in NE IN. I dunno. Never seen one myself.
Of course the entire state is overrun with Cobras.
The only Eastern Milk Snake I've caught was in Randolph Co., and it looked just like the one in your pic, but mine was very chill and very easy to handle.Incredibly aggressive
My property in Michigan has massasaugas on it. Only seen a few but the habitat is excellent for them. Great mix of swamp and hardwood, pine, etc. Lots of edge habitat. Every snake up there acts like a rattlesnake. Funny as heck to see.Northern Indiana only has massasauga rattlesnakes. There is SO MUCH misinformation about snakes going around, and people reacting with frenzies of fear and revulsion doesn't help. Education is usually the answer, but as with spiders, for some folks no presentation of facts is going to help.

I really wish I could have been there for that...I still hold the vertical leap record for Indiana upon stepping over a Timber Rattler in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest.
