In Indy at 10th/MLK there is a very old man that panhandles there. He holds a sign that says either "homeless..." or "veteran". He is NEITHER. He has a house 1 block away and was never in the military. He is, however, a child molester.

At the same spot there is often another guy with a cane and a limp. After he does the afternoon rush hour 4-7 he folds up his cane, and jumps in his brand new chevy cobalt and drives back to Geist, where he lives.... I can do this AAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLday long on our people in downtown Indy.

...to sit at an intersection waiting for people to hand me money. How does this work? Isn't easier, and more profitable, to simply get a job, which typically is indoors and climate controlled? :dunno:

My boyfriend and I went to a concert at the Chicago Theatre last spring. There was a guy with a sign that said "I'm just hungry" standing on the street (who happened to end up in our photo), and in the ten minutes we were messing around taking pictures, at least five people handed him a five or a ten.

I used to travel to Albuquerque NM for work. My customer that builds Modular homes was within five miles of the airport so I always got a Hotel Room near the hotel. There was always the same person canvassing the parking lot on a bicycle with broken fan belt in hand asking for money. They were always on their way to visit poor sick Grandma and just needed a little help.

Next month when I was there it was the same person, same bike and same broken fan belt. I finally busted them out and said they have seen them doing this for several months and to leave me alone. They were using profanity as they peddled away.

Sure enough next month when I arrived they peddled towards me until they got close enough to recognize me, said "oh it's the ***hole" as they rode off into the sunset. I just did a in your face kind of laugh at him.

FYI to those of us that live on the South side of Indy. I usually hit the exit ramp from 465 south to the US 31 south exit around 4:50pm through the week. There is a guy out there almost every day with a metal cane and a sign that says "Disabled Vet",
He must be wrapping up his shift close to that time, as I have seen him on more than one occasion hobble across US 31, once he hits the Taco Bell parking lot, he picks up his cane and walks normally to the cheap hotel located just North of the Taco Bell.
He must think that no one is still watching him once he hits the Taco Bell lot. He puts on quite the "show" in the median begging money.

I don't give money to any of these people, as tax payers, we all should know that there are plenty of programs in place to help the people that truly need help. I know a lot of these people can put on a show, and look as pathetic as they possibly can, don't fall for it. I know I am preaching to the choir here, but just a reminder, they can get help if they truly need/want it.

Yep, I see that guy all the time too. I just live about half a mile from there and come home that way as well.

When I lived in MD, at an intersection I went through everyday to/from work, there was frequently a group collecting for a church. They had 1-2 people on all 4 medians of the intersection, buckets with the church name, etc.
    No such church existed.
Never saw them again after paper ran a story on them scamming...
i assume they just went on to some other area.

    Two words...

    Pepper spray.

Back when this crap started it was "will work for food"
I got into some issues with my boss over that. I would buy an extra burger and offer it to them. I was either cussed at or admonished in some fashion.

The problem for me was throwing the burger at them. I am a fair shot witha Burger. Some snowflake called the service company I was working for and told on me. Boss saw no humor in it. I did. Hilariously laughing as I went home and pulled my tools. Not fired..... quit.

Tax free hundreds of $'s a day. People keep giving them money so they keep standing out there and taking it.

I always though it was illegal to beg on the side of the road but I guess not.

Listening to radio show host Mike McConnell, he had two points that bear repeating regarding this particular type of person:
    1) Real homeless advocates strongly advise not handing money over to these folks, because they more often than not just blow it on drugs/alcohol, because it encourages that the behavior continues, and because there are ample shelters willing to take care of them, so it's likely that they have burned a bridge if not allowed to stay in a given shelter for a justifiable reason.
    2) Consider that people in these situations are often (but not always) people who have taken a **** on every person in their lives who ever loved or cared about them, and financing a continuation of their behavior is doing these people no favors, when they should instead be forced to confront their situation and make amends.

McConnell spoke from experience regarding the second point, having had twin sisters, one of whom had achieved much in life, while the other had taken a **** on her entire family repeatedly, with predictable results.
