    So in summary:

Check ordinances BOTH for where you live and the county for wherever the property is.

If they have noise or gun discharge ordinances: forget it. You can build it but neighbors and even government can shut you down.

Seems like unincorporated > incorporated: increases odds in your favor

Indiana has a range grandfather/preemption law but it's on you to prove it was there when guys "just doing their job" come knocking and mailing letters. And they will there are documented cases of people who got Annexed then forced into court.......not by their neighbors but by government

This was a very informative thread! Thanks to all

Read above. Keep the rounds contained.
    He states no neighbors.
Pushing up a pile of earth that is not directly effecting a waterway or drainage (as stated above and Fargo is a Lawyer) has no effect on value. Therefore no effect on taxes. Therefore no worry's to anyone.

That you live in a socialist confine (tickets in your own driveway.....WOW) does not mean those who can and have escaped to the country are subject to such things.

noise..... keep that and rounds on your property

In 1962, Levi Kemp built an earthen berm at the back of his property, located in Marshall County, Kentucky, for use as a shooting range. At the time, no county zoning ordinances, regulations, or state laws were in effect to govern shooting ranges. Kemp expanded the range several times, the most recent in 2006, and two years later obtained the Board of Zoning Appeals’ approval to continue operating the range. The plaintiffs in this case, the Yates family and the Tibbs family, moved across the street from the range in 1995 and 2006 respectively. The Plaintiffs filed a nuisance action against Kemp for the noise the range produced. Both parties moved for summary judgment. The trial court granted Kemp’s motion as to the plaintiffs’ claims for nuisance and damages to their property. This appeal followed.

I seriously doubt that's all there is to it.

Shoot. You may be right. Doubt it all you want.

But your main issue, as I can see it, is that you live in northern Indiana, and in extreme proximity to Chicago at that. It is an extremely populated area, and speaking quite frankly, there are a lot of people in the northern 1/3 of the State that don't think a whole lot of firearms.

We, being the middle 1/3, and our neighbors in the southern 1/3, have an easier and more sane time with these issues excepting municipalities.

More or less, in Putnam County, he can do wtf he wants within the confines above (rounds kept on property 100% of the time; sound kept as low as possible, and at reasonable hours of the day). Yes, I am using "reasonable" in the legal sense of the word.

Technically, even in Marion County, you can go shoot in your back yard if you follow the two guidelines above.

I seriously doubt that's all there is to it.

I mean Hobart just started ticketing people for having their own cars park on their own property if it's not on an approved / concrete driveway.

I have to assume noise ordinances or something else would be used against anyone dare build one.

You're in Hobart in Lake County. Don't expect a lot of respect for private property rights and freedom. Thankfully, most other places in Indiana are not like this.

Yes noise would be a factor if he had neighbors close but he has stated he does not so he should be clear of this issue.

There are two homes on my section... the other is on the other side of the road. The property is 200m wide x 400m deep. Beyond me, is another mile of trees and farm land without residences.

Photos will come. The home has been renovated, just needs a little trim finishing (putty and paint) A large portion of the property is actually enrolled in a program witih the DNR for reforestation (planted in neat rows). The back of the property was agricultural, but is now wooded. The DNR pays to have that left wooded. There is OLD growth, very mature trees, in the back corner. Which the current owners now mow, which we will use for a small secluded camping area with fire ring etc...

My drive to work went from 15 minutes, to 45... but I drive in once per week. I didn't win the lottery, but we had this home in the burbs paid off four years ago, so we have squirreled away some funds for the down payment on the new one. The sale of our existing home should pay off the new property at that point.

Im also going to be in need of a decent zero turn mower, if y'all know of a place. I will be mowing 2-3 acres total. The home sits on 1 acre manicured. The acre adjacent, with road frontage, is a good place for atvs to run, so I can mow that less. The other acre is a lane that runs the perimeter of the property to the back, where the "park" area is. The rest is wooded.

Im sorry, I was away at work the past few days, but I do apppreciate all of the help here. If you have any further suggestions, I'm all ears!

I'm going to be a busy man... with a 2200sq foot shop, I can finally own large power tools... which means projects galore.

I am bad at math... the pole barn is 2400sq foot, and it also has to large lofts, one on either side, for storage off the floor. Any good places to look for used power equipment?

I'm going to be in the same boat. My plan is to build a U shaped berm at least 8 feet high. How wide should the inside of the U be?

Sounds like a great project. Good luck with the new land, house and range, and keep us posted with picture when possible.

I will say this...Having one's own range is the greatest thing since thick cut bacon....Your mouth waters and deciding to shoot involves nothing more than stepping out in to the back yard...

    Enjoy....

I am a big fan of grill n shoots......

What you folks North of Columbus call "berms" we call hollers, knobs, ridge lines, or cliffs and you don't have to build them...God so loved Southern Indiana he built us back stops...

Most landowners make huge mistakes in building a safe range. Best way to save headache and money is to get a professional consultation?

I'd be very jealous, but then I remember you have snakes on your property.
