That would be a whole lot of tables for them to do the inevitable stupid gun layout they always like to do, but hey they got 1200 more guns off the "street". That double barrel shotgun with the bent barrel could have been a nasty club.

Anybody else cringe at the PILE of handguns? If they were in good condition before, they aren't anymore. That's no way to treat a gun that just lost it's owner.:(

He was a hoarder, not a criminal. How can the police justify seizing private property?

You think it's a good idea for 1200 guns and 6 tons of ammo to sit in an empty townhouse? Yeah, no way for all that stuff to just disappear!

You're right about the "hoarder" part. Please keep in mind there are health and safety laws for those who hoard things, such as trash or animals. Personally, I'd be scared as shiat to live next door to someone with TONS of ammo! A fire gets out of hand and BOOM!, there goes the neighborhood! Would probably dwarf the Southside Indy gas explosion!

I think it would have been an excellent idea to leave the 1200 guns and 6 tons of ammo alone in an empty townhouse until the police turned it into an attractive target. The public was unaware of their existence and only became aware of the guns and ammo because the police called the press attention to them. This is even before seeing how poorly they are handling the firearms causing unnecessary damage before considering anyone's potential inheritance.

Uncared for trash and animals can cause disease. There is a public health issue involved. There is no public health issue with a collection of firearms and ammunition.

Tons of ammo are not an explosive hazard. Please watch the following video for a very good education on the safety behind cartridge technology.

There is no public health issue with a collection of firearms and ammunition.

Other than firefighters unwilling (or not allowed by senior firemen) to attack the fire due to thousands of rounds cooking off and not knowing what else is stored in there - hundreds of pounds of powder in bulk quantities for reloading purposes, hand-loaded 37mm grenade rounds, etc.

Yeah, the quantity of guns and ammo was unknown until discovered. Once discovered, the cops had to secure everything, as that info wasn't going to be secret for very long. There are bad cops, you know. I have personally witnessed cops enter a field of wild marijuana to get some bud before the plot was destroyed, and for some reason, it took the cops several days to get around to that plot. I can just imagine how this would have played out had they not secured it all:

Police Spokesman, Day 1: "We've discovered 1200 firearms and 6 tons of ammo, but it's now under 24-hour police supervision until we can move it all."
Police Spokesman, Day 2: "We're making plans to relocate the 975 firearms and the 5 tons of ammo, but you need a big, remote, secure location to store all of that safely!"
Police Spokesman, Day 3: "We have finally located a secure facility to store the 850 firearms and 3.75 tons of ammo."
Police Spokesman, Day 4: "The city can rest easier, knowing that all 625 firearms and a ton of ammo is off the street and stored in a secret, secure location."
