Or, don't rest the shotgun on your f*cking foot! Rule 2, people.
Trapshooters routinely rest their muzzles on their feet. There's even a leather device you can buy that laces into your shoe to protect the muzzle.
Frankly, I'm surprised the wound was that small.

My thoughts also. And shouldn't his shoe have more blast damage?:dunno:

At my range, the trap firing line is concrete. I'd wager that the guy in the OP was standing on dirt and that the shot continued into the Earth. If he had been on concrete, I'd think that the shot would have grenaded the end of his foot.

I graduated with a guy who did this...his story was he was "cleaning it" and didn't unload it first...ended up shooting off his big toe. Had a cast on forever and was on crutches forever before finally switching to a cane which he still uses last I knew. (this was just 2-2.5 years ago)

Broke 3 rules that I can think of.
    1. ALWAYS LOADED!
    2. Bugger hook off of bang switch
    3. Muzzle direction

Lucky Lucky. Gonna be a nasty scar.

The ONLY way I EVER rest my shotgun on my foot is unloaded and with the action open. If there's something in the chamber, it's going to be pointed at the ground or at the sky.

Several skeet/trap shooters do this, and I believe it's perfectly safe as long as you aren't an idiot.

wow! just... wow! had he done it in Evansville and come to the hospital he would have likely ended up on my unit. I've seen some pretty good injuries where I work but never a perfectly circular hole in a couple toes!

Just because it's commonly done doesn't make it safe. Most probably just get lucky. This guys luck ran out.

If you folow the "four rules" you don't have to worry about luck or the lack thereof.

I guess I don't understand the "need" to rest your muzzle on you foot. Why not the butt? Does it make you look cool or something?

Ya, put the butt on your foot so the barrel can be pointed at less important things like your head:rolleyes:

Hmmm. Shotgun + foot = finger off trigger.

You would think that would be simple. Or maybe not.
