When I first started hunting I bought 1000 gr insulated irish setter boots and paired that with a liner and smartwool thick socks. My feet were always cold. I was at Bass Pro a few years back and they had hunting pros during the fall classic giving advice. I asked one of the guys what he used for boots and he said he uses Muck Woody Max boots in the cold paired with a medium weight wool sock and a good liner.
He said that most people go too heavy on the sock and the insulation and they don't realize their foot is sweating which leads to cold feet. He said keeping your feet dry from the start is the key and thats why he only used a medium weight wool sock and the Muck which is roomy and allows the air to circulate.
I went with his advice and it has been spot on. I drive to my hunting spot with only my liners on. If I am early and have time I pack my socks and put them on in the tree when I get settled. If I am late and peak movement time is close I put them on at the truck and walk at a normal pace so I don't sweat.
