no responsible hunter should ever take a 200 yard shot (on anything) with a pistol. Far too easy to mistake a shadow, and far too likely you'll miss. At 200 yards a miss can get ugly real quick. Stuff like this give hunting and gun owners a bad rep.

Single shot pistol. Many of those that people hunt with are scoped and fire a rifle round. Firing something like a T/C Encore in .243, 7-08, .308 or 30-06? I don't think 200 yards is too far.

The distance isn't the problem here.

I have a custom bolt pistol in 6br, and compete regularly at distances to 200 meters. When hunting, I use a scope at 6x-10x. 200 yards with almost any kind of a rest/support is a chip shot. Have taken several deer at 150+. Longest shot was 255. Can't recall ever losing one. Most of the people who choose to hunt with pistol are very good marksman. The real problem was in him not clearly identifying his target. It would have helped if the victim was wearing orange for their own safety during hunting season. (not an excuse for the hunter)

It is idiots like this that hunters, and gun owners in general, a bad name. Tragedies like this only give the anti hunting and anti gun left more ammunition for their cause. Hopefully this idiot is sent to the slammer for a long time. Prayers for the victim.
