Sitting on the porch with a cigar, glass of Lagavulin 16, behind my flag... Looking through the Twitter feeds of people posting their friends and family that served.

Happy Memorial Day. Definitely a beautiful day for it.

My uncle was in the 47th Regiment of the 9th Division. I don't know much of his military record beyond a basic unit history and date that he fell. His younger brother showed me some of his personal things that he had on him when he fell and also related the story about the earlier battle.

    I love this quote.

Like all other overseas American cemeteries in France for World War I and II, France has granted the United States a special, perpetual concession to the land occupied by the cemetery, free of any charge or any tax.

    That plaque says:

On this monument are engraved the names of American soldiers who having given their lives to their country are now resting in unknown places.

Not all soldiers killed in action were found so most cemeteries have a wall filled with names of soldiers that couldn't be properly burried.
I guess some of those soldiers could also be burried in that same cemetery under "unknown soldier" graves.
They just couldn't match a name with a body.

Here is a similar plaque in another cemetery, in English this time.

President Reagan gave a speech in front of that monument.
