What the guy did turned out great, and had multiple steps, but IMHO no art degree needed.
Simple stuff, just more steps.
Pay attention to the spacing he uses.
In the base layers, and then the brush painted stuff.
That is the key.
Make a cardboard cutout of your gun and do a practice run, to completion, and see what you did wrong.
Should have comparable results on the 2nd run, on the real rig.
Yeah, maybe. I am more of a linear guy. Let me mask off geometric shapes and I can do okay. Free handing the reeds...well I would need lot's of practice.
I agree on the fashion statement though. When I visited my son at his AFB, all the Security Forces had black rifles.
I duck hunted for most of my younger years with a shiny blued and highly polished walnut stocked shotgun. I am pretty sure I never scared a duck off from all my bling.
Never painted my face either.
But it does look cool!
