so I decided to room with a friend of mine as a favor this semester. Turns out I can only stand him in small doses... living with him, not so much.

turns out, he's a political sociopath. He's gone from supporting monarchy to socialism to communism and back... mostly he loves the idea of the gov't being our parents (direct quote). I have an issue with the whole idea of his that the gov't should run every aspect of our lives. obviously most of you guys do as well.
he is very anti-2a. "people do not have an inherent right to guns." he said that earlier today. for some reason the idea of "when the seconds count, the police are minutes away" equates into needing a personal policeman and breaking up a robbery is vigilante-ism. rather than being your own police force and a responsible citizen. in all fairness, he is from NH and is a philosophy major, so its easy to see how he would have such a warped worldview... and of course he sees his own argument as the only logically valid argument, despite the fact that his arguments repeatedly contradict the teachings of the Church and himself.

it annoys the hell out of me.

is there anything that can be done short of bottling up and losing it and *****ing to people behind his back? anyone know of any websites I could show him (aside from the obvious ones about self-defence shootings) that might at least let him see a viewpoint other than his and other than my "clearly wrong" viewpoint?

and Indoorsoccerfrea, if you're reading this, screw you for having to stay on main campus and not be my roommate.

cliffnotes: roommate hates :ar15:, is always :blahblah:, makes me :xmad: and wanna :bat:. brb, need a :chillpill:

Sounds like he's a smart young guy trying on different political philosophies. There's nothing wrong with this. Give him smart, well thought out arguments (if you're smart enough to discriminate, there's plenty of those on this board - check out that guy dross for instance) and trust that eventually some might sink in.

College is the place to try on ideas for size.

My best roommate was a guy that was so self centered and self involved and opinionated that I now realize that I must have some sort of supernatural zen buddist temperment that kept me from choking the blathering life out him weekly.

It really did reflect the tone of MSU at the time and it might be worse now - maybe not.

I knew that if I had allowed my impulses to be acted upon, I would have only played into his own depiction of people that are different then him.

I've only had two other roommates since then, and we never really had to discuss anything political.

He probably enjoys spewing BS. Drop him of in a rough part of town with only the clothes on his back if he doesn't feel that he has a right to defend himself.

when he's not talking about politics, he's a great guy. but in all honesty, I fear that this might end our friendship. I"m gonna try as hard as I can not to room with him when we get back to main campus

Have you tried to talk to him about it? Sometimes people are surprised by the results of a good talk over a couple of beers/sodas.

I feel this way about one of my best friends, and he and I agree on 80% of our politics. What's worked for me is to make a unilateral "no politics" rule. He starts in, you say "I don't want to talk about it", and then either change the subject or CLAM THE HELL UP. He asks why, you say "all it ever does is **** me off, and I'd rather stay friends with you than spend all of our time together pissing me off."

We've been friends for going on 10 years, so it must work at some level. :twocents:

tried that... a couple of beers just makes him more stubborn, and me irritated cus beer's not cheap.

fletch, I'm hoping that it turns out that way, but I've told him that I don't want to talk about politics... maybe he just needs more reiteration..

    Where's the bacon?
What to do with a roommate like that? Sad and heartless as it will sound, wait for the day he becomes a victim of some lowlife, scum-sucking rectal orifice. Let him feel the helplessness and realize that the almighty government isn't going to be there to save him, dry his tears, and wipe his widdow bottom for him.

They say a conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. For his sake, I hope he survives the experience.

    Blessings,
    Bill

Sometimes when I run into people like this, the anti's, I just play it dumb and say "Hey man, you wanna go shootin'?" They'll re-explain their whole philosophy and all of their fancy reasoning again and I'll say: "Whatever, you wanna go shootin', it's pretty fun!" They are forced to either give up trying to reason with me because I am not reasoning back, be rude and tell me they don't want to go shooting or be polite and accept my friendly offer to go shooting. If you can get them to go shooting, you win. If you gan get them to be rude and turn down your friendly offer, you win. If they give up arguing with you, you win. The key is to never try to be rational, just shrug your shoulders and say "Whatever. You wanna go shootin'?"

He'd have to have something someone else wanted in order to be mugged. AS a liberal, he can't have a job because that empowers Big Business, he can't have money because he's given it away to needy, he probably doesn't have a car because the only ones he'd drive on principle are too expensive for the average American and way too expensive for the lib with no money; and any car he could afford he'd refuse to drive.

Tell him you've heard enough of his opinion on it. It's got nothing to do with school and why we are here and we have to live together. Tell him to shut up about it or be prepared for prank death match at the least next time he mentions it or just a plane butt kicking.

Prepare your own self to SHUT UP about it prior to demanding some one else shut up.

Talk about something you can do something about, school, nookie, cars, nookie, or just talk about nookie and stay out of each other's business on less important matters.

You can't fix stupid. I just ended a debate with several former friends and classmates who insist that Socialism and forced redistribution of wealth are the only answer. It's like beating your head against a wall---you get nothing to show for it, and you have a headache at the end of it.

It's just like training a puppy. You have to be firm and consistent. Never allow yourself to be drawn into the vortex; always maintain a way out, even if it means literally walking out of the room saying "I'll be back when you're ready to talk about something else, because I'm not talking about this with you."
